Solution, types and its
characteristics
Definition

 substances. A solution may

exist in any phasA solution is
homogeneous mixture of two
or more
Characteristics

 A solution consists of homogeneous mixture

 A solution is composed of one phase.(solid,
liquid , gas)
 A solution does not scatter a light beam.
 Components of a solution cannot be
separated using simple mechanical filtration.
 Particles in a solution are not visible to the
naked eye
Types of solution

 A supersaturated solution
 An unsaturated solution
 Saturated solution
Supersaturated solution
 A supersaturated solution comprises of a large amount of solute at a
temperature where in it will be reduced as a result as a extra solute will
crystallize quickly
Unsaturated solution

 An unsaturated solution is a solution in which

a solvent is capable of dissolving any more
solute at a given temperature
Saturated solution

 A saturated solution can be defined as a

solution in which a solvent is not capable of
dissolving any more solute at a given
temperature
Forms of solution

 Aqueous solution
 Non aqueous solution
Aqueous solution

 When a solute is dissolved in a water the

solution is called aqueous solution
Example:
 Salt in water
 Sugar in water
 Copper sulfate in water
Non aqueous solution

 When a solute is dissolved in a solvent other

than water it is called non aqueous solution
Example:
 iodine in carbon tetrachloride
 Sulfur in carbon disulfide
 Phosphorus in ethyl alcohol
Classification of solution

 A dilute contains a small amount of a solute

in a large amount of a solvent

 A concentrated solution contains large

amount of a solute dissolved in a small
amount of solvent
Types of solutions

 Homogeneous solution

 Heterogeneous solution
Homogenous solution

 Homogenous solution are the solution with

uniform composition and propertise
throughout the
Example:
 A cup of coffee
 Perfume
 Cough syrup
 A solution of salt or sugar in water
Heterogeneous solution

 Heterogeneous solution are the solutions

with non uniform composition and properties
through out the solution
Example:
 Aerated drinks
 Salt water or sugar water mixtures
 Fruit juices
