Cyber Terminology

 Cyber Crime: is a generic term that refers to all criminal activities done using the
medium of computers, the internet, cyber space and the worldwide web.

 Cyber Security: means protecting information, equipment, devices, computer,


computer resource, communication device and information stored therein from
unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification or destruction.

 Cyber LAW: is a term used to describe the legal issues related to use of
communications technology, particularly "cyberspace", i.e. the Internet. Cyber
Law is represented by Indian IT ACT 2008

Common Scenarios – Cyber Pornography

 Cyber pornography covers pornographic websites, pornographic magazines produced


using computers and the Internet.

 Whoever publishes or transmits or causes to be published in the electronic form, any


material which is obscene in nature falls under cyber pornography.

 Section 67: Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic


form

 Punishment – Imprisonment from 2 – 10 years with fine up to 10 lakhs

 The CEO of a software company in Pune (India) was arrested for sending highly
obscene emails to a former employee.

 A student of the Air Force Balbharati School, New Delhi, was teased by all his
classmates for having a pockmarked face, used a free hosting provider to create a
website. He regularly uploaded “morphed” photographs of teachers and girls from
his school onto the website. He was arrested when the father of one of the victims
reported the case to the police.

Tips to Prevent ID Theft

1. Shred anything with your details on.


2. Check your statements and report anything suspicious.
3. Ensure your home network is secure.
4. Ignore emails saying “You’ve Won…” or from somebody you’re
suspicious about.

Identity Theft

 Kingfisher Airlines was duped of Rs 17 crore caused by an online


ticket booking fraud, caused by credit card bookings. These credit
card details were obtained by the thieves from various places like
shopping mall, restaurant and petrol-pump employees who swipe
these cards, felt the officers working on this case.

 An American national named Ken Haywood, whose most likely fault


was, that his Wi- Fi internet connection was hacked, and under the
scanner for involvement in the Ahmedabad terrorist attacks.

individual or group that uses information and communication
involving electronic technologies to facilitate deliberate and

Golden Rules

 There’s no guaranteed get-rich-quick schemes - sound to good to be true?


 Never send money or give out your details when you do not know/trust the person or
company you are giving them to.
 Log directly onto a website rather than clicking on the link provided.
 Never reply to spam emails, even when you're trying to stop them.
 Legitimate banks and companies will not ask for your details via email or phone.
 Just because a company has a well design website doesn't means it legitimate.
 Be suspicious. If you are unsure about anything, seek advice from family or Police.

CYBER CRIME FIGURES

 ‘Over 30% cybercrime victims in UP are minors – Times of India – Dec 2017
 The recently released NCRB data showed that UP recorded 2,639 cybercrime cases in 2016, the
highest in India. Maharashtra and Karnataka were at second and third positions with 2,380 and
1,101 cases respectively. Comparing cybercrime data since 2014, the rate of cybercrime in UP
has recorded a 34% increase.
 Over 60% of cybercrimes are mainly related to money, while the remaining might aim at harassing
intentionally. For example, a former partner trying to take revenge by posting pictures of the person."

Gujarat Police have Cyber Suraksha Kavach

 Gujarat police are all set to get a 'Cyber Suraksha Kavach', a special cell for prevention, control and
detection of the cyber-related crime in the state on 11th March 2015.

 There is a 'Digital Skills Academy’ is started, which will be governed by the state Home Department.

 Police and experts in the field of cyber security are working together in this cell, which is headed by an
ADG-rank officer.

 The first-of-its-kind of body will take assistance from Gujarat forensic Science University (GFSU),
