Definition of a Cooperative
Republic Act 9520
Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008
An autonomous and duly registered association
of persons, with a common bond of interest,
who have voluntarily joined together to achieve
their social, economic, and cultural needs and
aspirations by making equitable contributions
to the capital required, patronizing their
products and services and accepting a fair share
of the risks and benefits of the undertaking in
accordance with universally-accepted
cooperative principles.

The cooperative principles are guidelines by which cooperatives


put their values into practice.

Open and Voluntary
Membership
Coops are voluntary organizations and open to all persons
willing to accept the responsibilities of membership,
without discrimination.

2 Democratic Member
Control

Coops are organizations democratically controlled by members who


participate in setting policies and decisions. Elected officers are
accountable to the membership. There is equal voting rights –
One Member, One Vote. No proxy voting.

Participation
Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control,
the capital of their cooperative. Members’ benefit is in
proportion to their transactions with the coop and their
support to other coop activities.

Autonomy and
Independence
Coops are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by
members. If coops enter into agreements with other organizations,
they must ensure democratic control and maintain their
cooperative autonomy.
