CONTENTS
• Gas lift

• Gas lift assembly

• Working

• Types of gas lift

GAS LIFT

• An artificial-lift method in which gas is injected into the production tubing to reduce the
hydrostatic pressure of the fluid column. The resulting reduction in bottomhole pressure allows
the reservoir liquids to enter the wellbore at a higher flow rate

• The injection gas is typically conveyed down the tubing-casing annulus and enters the
production train through a series of gas-lift valves

• Used in deep wells

• Requires minimal equipment

• Usually used in offshore conditions

GAS LIFT ASSEMBLY
Mandrels
• Mandrels are the shafts on the tubing string where the tools can be mounted

Main functions
• To help maintain the pressure on injected gas in the annulus

• To keep preventing oil leakage back into the annulus

Types of mandrels
• Conventional mandrels

• Side pocket mandrels

CONVENTIONAL MANDRELS SIDE POCKET MANDRELS
• Valves have already been set in the place • valves can be accessed for servicing and
inside the mandrel cleaning through tubing wireline

• Tubing and valves must be pulled out • It means that the valves in the side pocket
when only the valves need to be cleaned packet mandrel can be retrieved and
and serviced re inserted without pulling the entire tubing
string when valves need to be serviced
WORKING

• Compressed gas at the surface is injected into the annulus so this pushes the liquid depth
down as the gas fills the space when the compresses gas reaches the top loading valves

• Then the valves in the mandrels in the tubing string is now opened and the gas lightens the
load of heavier oils in the hydrostatic column giving the oil the enough lift from the remaining
energy in the formation so it can be pushed on the surface

• As the more compressed gas pushed into the annulus the liquid level continuously going
downward until it reaches the second unloading valve as the second valve open the first one
is closed so the compressed gas in the tubing allows more oil to be pushed from the
hydrostatic column into the surface

• Then the same procedure happens in third valve open and second valve closed’
• So the multiple valves in the mandrels at varying depths in the tubing allow the compressed
gas to enter the tubing from ever increasing depth until the bottom of the hole is reached

• When it reaches at the last valve in the tubing the tubing string is said to be in steady state
operating condition

• Then the hydrostatic column lighten with the pressurized gas the reservoir pressure is enough
to push oil in the tubing string throughout the entire hydrostatic column to the surface

• At the end the gas comes at the surface is recaptured and recycled through the separator
then sent to the compressor and again sent down as a compressed gas in the annulus
TYPES
Continuous gas lift
• Continuous injecting gas into the annulus

• It will usually be more efficient for wells producing at high rates

Intermittent gas lift

• Gas lift system is operated on an intermittent basis

• It is used to replace continuous gas lift on wells that have depleted to low rates of production

• Usually 150-200 bbl/day
