Scrabble
History: Originally called Criss Cross, the game, which was based
on the crossword puzzle and anagrams, was developed by Alfred M.
Butts, an architect, in 1931. It was redesigned, renamed as Scrabble,
and marketed by James Brunot in 1948. It was first sold in Great
Britain in 1954. Scrabble was later produced in many foreign
languages, Braille, and magnetic editions and continued to be one of
the leading board-and-tile games in the United States. Tournaments
have been held in the United States since 1973.
Mechanics:
Mechanics:
1. Players draw seven tiles from a pool at the start and replenish their supply
after each turn.
2. Tiles in the pool and those of other players are kept secret so that a player
can see only those tiles on the board and his own.
3. A player may forfeit his turn and exchange any or all of his tiles for those
in the pool.
Mechanics:
4.There are 100 letter tiles, each imprinted with a point value for different
letters, approximately corresponding to the frequency of occurrence of the
letter in English words.
5. Words are scored by adding up the point values of their letters,
multiplied by any of 61 premium squares that may be covered, such as
double letter, triple letter, double word, and triple word.
Scoring:
3. Put the tiles in the bag and shake them. To make sure that the letters are distributed
fairly, put them into the bag, close it, and shake them around a bit.
4. Determine who goes first. Pass the bag around the table and allow each player to
draw one tile. Then, place your tiles face up on the table. The player with the letter that
is closest to the letter “A” gets to go first. Put these letters back into the bag and shuffle
them again before drawing tiles. If any player draws a blank tile, he or she will start the
game
5. Draw your tiles. Beginning with the person who drew the tile closest to "A", allow
the players to take seven tiles. Hold the bag above eye level so that you can't see the
tiles. Do not show these tiles to your fellow players. Just put them onto your tile rack
and pass the bag to the next player until everyone has drawn their letters
Cont:
Double Letter Score: This means that a letter placed on this square receives
double the number of points that are shown on the letter.
Double Word Score: This means that a word that is made that includes the letter
that is placed on this square receives double the number of points that it otherwise
would.
Triple Letter Score: This means that a letter placed on this square receives three
times the number of points that are shown on the letter.
Triple Word Score: This means that a word that is made that includes the letter
that is placed on this square receives triple the number of points that it otherwise
would.

CHESS
Introduction:
King One space in any direction (forward, backward, The King can never move himself into check (where
sideways, or diagonally) he can be captured).
Queen As far as she can go in any direction (forward, The Queen may not skip over or past her own piece.
backward, sideways, or diagonally)
Rook As far as it can go forward, backward, or sideways The Rook cannot travel diagonally.
Bishop As far as it can go diagonally The Bishop always stays on the same color on which
it started.
Knight Two squares in one direction (forward, backward, or The Knight makes the shape of an "L" when it
sideways) and one more square at a 90 degree angle moves. It does not move diagonally. It can also jump
over other pieces.
Pawn Only moves forward one space, but captures one space On their very first move, Pawns can move two
diagonally spaces.
Special Rules:
Promotion:
If a Pawn reaches the opposite side of the board, it can be promoted to any piece
(even one that has not yet been captured).
En Passant:
If a Pawn's first move of two spaces lands it directly next to an opponent's Pawn,
the opponent has the option of capturing the Pawn as it passes. If it chooses to
capture, the opposing Pawn advances diagonally as it would have if the first Pawn
had initially moved only one space. If the opponent chooses not to capture on the
turn immediately after the two-square jump, s/he cannot capture afterward, even
if the pawn hasn't moved forward
Cont..
Castling:
This can be done on the Rook's and the King's first move only. If no other pieces
are in between them or could potentially move between them, the King is moved
two spaces closer to the Rook. The Rook is then placed on the opposite side of the
King. The King cannot be in check or pass through check when performing this
move.
