Find the equation
6 of 11 © Boardworks 2012
The equation of a circle
(x – a)2 + (y – b)2 = r2
x2 – 2ax + a2 + y2 – 2by + b2 = r2
rearrange:
x2 + y2 – 2ax – 2by + a2 + b2 – r2 = 0
x2 + y2 – 2ax – 2by + c = 0

Example
Find the center and the radius of a circle with the equation
(x – 2)2 + (y + 7)2 = 64
Compare this to the general form of the equation of
a circle of radius r centered on the point (a, b):
(x – a)2 + (y – b)2 = r2
(x – 2)2 + (y + 7)2 = 64
So a = 2, b = –7 and r2 = 64.

Finding the center and the radius
Find the center and the radius of a circle with the equation
x2 + y2 + 4x – 6y + 9 = 0
Complete the square to write the equation in the form (x – a)2 + (y – b)2 = r2.
rearrange the equation to put
x2 + 4x + y2 – 6y + 9 = 0
the x terms and the y terms together:
complete the square for the x terms and then for the y terms:
x2 + 4x = (x + 2)2 – 4 y2 – 6y = (y – 3)2 – 9
substitute these expressions
(x + 2)2 – 4 + (y – 3)2 – 9 + 9 = 0
into the equation and simplify:
(x + 2)2 + (y – 3)2 = 4
(x + 2)2 + (y – 3)2 = 22
The center is at the point (–2, 3) and the radius is 2.
