Introduction to Indian Standard : 1200

 Name of Organization : Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

 Division Name : Civil Engineering Division

 Section Name : Methods of Measurement of Works of Civil Engineering (CED 44)

 Designator of Legally Binding Document : Indian Standard (IS) 1200

 Title of Legally Binding Document : Method of Measurement of Building and Civil Engineering Works
Introduction to Indian Standard : 1200 - 22

 This Indian Standard (IS:1200) Part XXII was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 20 th April, 1982.

 Why Measurement is Important ?

Without the ability to measure, it would be difficult for scientists to conduct experiments or form theories.
Not only is measurement important in science and the chemical industry, it is also essential in farming,
engineering, construction, manufacturing, commerce, and numerous other occupations and activities.

 This standard eliminates different methodology of measurement for various materials used in building and civil
works materials like sand, boulders, aggregates, wood, cement, etc.

 IS:1200 (Part XXVII) covers the method of measurement of materials normally used in buildings and civil works.
General Consideration in IS:1200 (Part XXVII)

 Description of Item – Description of each item shall, unless otherwise stated, include, wherever necessary,
conveyance and delivery, handling, unloading, storing etc.

 Limits of Measurement –

(Decimal Place)
Dimensions 0.01 M
Area 0.01 M2
Volume 0.01 M3
Weight 1 Kg

 Bill of Quantities – Bills of quantities shall fully describe materials.
