Passive voice

Is used to express ideas in which


the focus of the sentence is not on
the doer but on the object of the
action. The doer of the action is
possibly unknown
The pattern of passive in English

• It depends on the object, because the object will replace the subject
position
• It depends on the tenses
• Must use a transitive verb, it means the sentence has object
complement
Passive voice ( S + Be + V3 )
Be tenses pattern

1. Is, am , are Simple present tense S + V1 + O


2. Was, were Simple past tense S + V2 + O
3. Being Present continuous S + is, am, are + V- Ing
4. Being Past continuous S + was, were + V- Ing
5. Be Present future S + Will + V1
6. Be Past future S + Would + V1
7. Been Present perfect S + Have/has + V3
8. Been Past perfect S + Had + V3
Example :
o The lady buys a new bag ( simple present, active )
A new bag is bought by the lady ( passive )
o The lady bought a new bag ( past tense, active)
A new bag was bought by her ( passive )
o The lady is buying a new bag ( present continuous, active )
A new bag is being bought by her ( passive )
o The lady was buying a new bag ( past continuous, active )
A new bag was being bought by her ( passive )
o The lady will buy a new bag ( present future, active )
A new bag will be bought by her ( passive )
o The lady would buy a new bag ( past future, active )
A new bag would be bought by her ( passive )
o The lady has bought a new bag ( present perfect, active )
A new bag has been bought by her ( passive )
o The lady had bought a new bag ( past perfect, active )
A new bag had been bought by her ( passive )
