3G TECHNOLOGY
3 G network is one of the leading technologies in today’s wireless
technology. 3G is a collection of technologies including EDGE, HSDPA
etc that promise to bring high-speed data services to mobile work
forces. Progress toward ubiquitous 3G coverage is being made but
competition from rival technologies continues to complicate the market.
Many users have rushed to purchase 3G smart phones, and roaming
between carriers continues to be a concern. Still, 3G holds enormous
promise for users to always be on the cellular network without the
security worries of using a wireless hotspot.
This service is available with all wireless phones. Verizon is the first
one to use this. It was first implemented on CDMA phones .Now this
service is also available with GSM. If we describe 3G is nothing but
fast stream and high bandwidth.
EVOLUTION
1G(1980’s)
Provide AMPS(advanced mobile phone service) networks
used FDMA(frequency division multiplexing access) to carry
analog voice over channels in the 800 MHz freq. band
2G(1990’s)
Uses two mobile phones standards:-
1. CDMA(code division multiple access) – Can
multiplex 64 calls per channel in the 800 MHz
frequency band.
2. GSM(global system for mobile communication) –
Uses TDMA(time division multiple access) to
multiplex up to 8 calls per channel in the 900 to 1800 MHz
frequency band.
(contd.)
2.5G
Uses packet switching and includes many multimedia applications
like GPRS, EDGE etc.
3G
• Concept created by international telecomm union(ITU) and called
IMT 2000. Major aim was to provide global roaming.

BENEFITS OF 3G
With 3G you can do everything you do now, but you can do it much
better, a lot faster and from almost anywhere! Some of the main
advantages are that 3G allows for
higher call volumes
faster data retrieving speed(3 mbps)
support many multimedia applications such as video call via mobile
phone, email sms, games etc.
Location-based services
• e.g. Map guide to nearest destination
similar like GPS technology
M-commerce
e-commerce to mobile terminals, exp. Ordering goods,
checking bank account
