LABOUR RELATIONS CODE….

○ The Code is established in accordance with the provisions


of section 3 of the Labour Relations and Industrial
Disputes Act.

○ Its purpose is to set out guidelines which in the opinion of


the Minister will be helpful for the purpose of promoting
good labour relations.

Promotes:

○ free collective bargaining

○ development and maintenance of orderly procedures and


expeditious settling of disputes

○ development and maintenance of good personnel


management practices

Recognizes that:
○ management needs to use its resources (including human)
efficiently.

○ Work is a social right, is to be respected, and dignity


accorded to workers.

○ Continuity of employment, security of earnings and job


satisfaction should be ensured.

○ All parties should cooperate in the solution to conflicts.

○ The LRC applies to all employers, workers and unions.

○ The provisions of the code may be relevant in deciding


questions before a tribunal or board.

○ A breach of the LRC does not make one liable for legal
proceedings.

○ The LRC may be revised by the MOL in consultation


with representative organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
○ Employers:

○ discharge their obligations under the agreed terms and


conditions of employment
○ respect the workers right to belong to a trade union
○ ensure adequate and effective procedures for negotiation
○ policies and procedures are understood and implemented
by individuals qualified to IR.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Employees:

○ to perform to the best of his/her ability and not engage in


unsafe or unhealthy practices

○ abide by the terms of the employment contract and


collective agreements

○ refrain from action that conflict with obligations of


employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Trade Unions:

○ ensure cooperation with management in promoting


efficiency and good IR.
○ Ensure union officials observe arrangements
○ Provide training for delegates
○ Be properly staffed to serve the needs of the membership
○ Assist members to understand terms and conditions of
service.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Employers Association:
○ Promote the interest of their members, give due regard to
the interest of workers and the national interest.

○ Encourage recognition of and compliance with provisions


for good IR.
