Advantages and

Disadvantages of
Hydroelectric Power
Dam
ALEX GREGG J. SHIROMA
Advantages
GREEN
◦ Generating electricity with hydro energy is not
polluting itself. The only pollution occurs during
the construction of these massive power plants.
◦ it won’t pollute the air like power plants that
burn fossil fuel, such as coal or natural gas.
Advantages
SAFE
◦ Compared to among others fossil fuels and nuclear energy, hydroelectricity is much safer. There
is no fuel involved (other than water that is).
Advantages
RENEWABLE
◦ Hydroelectric energy is renewable. which means it will never run out unless the water stops flowing. As a result,
hydro plants are built to last.
Advantages
RELIABLE
◦ The reliability of a hydropower plant to supply energy if other energy resources is inaccessible
Advantages
FLEXIBLE
◦ It does not only charge turbines but it also supply streams beyond the area where water flows.
Disadvantages
IMPACT ON FISH
◦ The fish along the streams that comes from the dam could not reached its full potential because of the water flowing
that is controlled.
Disadvantages
EXPENSIVE
◦ Hydroelectric powerplants are expensive to build but you only need few personnel to operate the machineries.
Disadvantages
SUSCEPTIBLE TO DROUGHTS
◦ It relies on water flow. It means if there is no rainfall, the plant could not generate electricity.
Disadvantages
LIMITED RESERVOIRS
◦ In building hydropower plants there are certain condition before it is established. The source of water, will it sustain
enough for long term. The reason alone explains that there are only limited places in the world that has sufficient water
as fuel in the powerplant.
Disadvantages
FLOOD RISK
◦ It still possess a threat that when the dams has too much water and needs to be released, the risk of nearby town to be
affected will be significant.
RECAP
Hydroelectric Powerplants are renewable, safe, flexible and cost-
competitive but could possess a risk such as failure of dam, high
costs, drought and the relocation of nearby town to lower the flood
risk
