SEXISM
Sexism is discrimination on the basis of gender.
While it is primarily women who are affected
by sexism, it can be used to discriminate
against either men or women.
SEXISM IN LANGUAGE
It is the use of language which devalues members of one sex.
Almost invariably women, and thus fosters gender inequality. It is a
word or phrases that devalue of one sex or one particular gender and
promoting or to bring up gender inequality.
It discriminates against women by rendering them invisible or
initializing them at the same time that it perpetuates notions of male
supremacy. It is discriminating women by making them invisible .
CONCERN ABOUT MERE WORDS
 Language articulates consciousness
(aware of one’s existence)
 Language reflects culture.
 Language affects socialization.

Why to Avoid Sexist Language
 Sexist language encourages discrimination and can discourage people
from pursing their dreams. E.g. If engineers are always spoken of as a
male , a girl who aspire to be an engineer may feel that she has no hope
since all engineer are men.
 Sexist language also offend people.
 It sometimes become offensive to audience gets message across.
 People will be receptive to our arguments because some time audience
/listener aggrieved by use of exclusively masculine pronouns.
How to avoid Sexist language
 Use Humanity or the human race instead of man or mankind when
you are referring to all people.
 If we are speaking of a single hypothetical individual , use person
instead of man.
 Use genderless titles whenever possible, such as
 (flight attendant instead of stewardess)
(firefighter instead of fireman)
(homemaker instead of house wife)
 Avoid adding genders markers to genderless titles.
