STRATEGIES
READING
 It is always an interaction between the text
and the reader.
 Reading can also a skill that can be

improved through consistent practice.


 It can be defined as a cognitive process of

decoding symbols to drive meaning from


text.
THE NATURE OF READING
STRATEGIES
 Reading is interactive processbetween the
readers and the text, so to make the students to
be able in reading they must have reading
strategies
 Reading strategies is the strategy or the way that

used by the readers to understand the text.


 Reading strategy is the plan that is followed in

reading
 Reading strategies are applied skills
 Reading strategy makes the readers
think fully about their reading
 Reading strategies are ways or tools to

reach goal understanding written text


or printed materials for solving the
problems in constructing meaning.

they must occur with in the context of a


reading and they teach the students
how to think about reading
KINDS OF READING
STRATEGIES
 According to oxford there are six strategies
 1. memory
 2. cognitive
 3. compensatory
 4. meta-cognitive
 5. affective
 6. social strategies
1. MEMORY
 Memory strategy is a strategy which involves minds in

remembering information given


2. COGNITIVE
 Cognitive strategies are the strategies that involve the

identification, retention, and retrieval of language


elements, that involve repeating recognizing and using
formulas and patterns, practicing naturaliscally, getting
the idea quickly using resources for reciving and
sending messages, reasoning deductively, transleting,
transfering, taking notes, summarizing, and highlighting.
3. COMPENSATORY
 Compansation strategies which enable the learners

use a new lamguage for either comprehension or


production despite limitations in knowledge.
 The strategies that can be applied in competation

strategies is guesing or inferring by using clues ( and


linguistics clues).
4. META-COGNITIVE STRATEGIES
 which deal with planing, motoring and evaluating of

language learning activities.


 Meta-cognitive strategies can be used for coordinating

the reading process.


5. AFFECTIVE
 That serve to regulate emotions, attitudes, motivaions

and values which include using progresive relaxation,


 using music, using laughter diary, and discussing

your fellings with someone else.


6. Social strategies
 Refer to actions learners taken to interact with the

users of the laguange.


 It incluedes cooperating with proficient users og the

new language developing cultural understanding, and


becoming aware of others thoughts and fellings.
SKIMMING AND SCANNING
SKIMMING
 A process of speed reading that involves running your

eye very quickly over large chunks of the text,


searching the sentences of a page for clues to the
main idea or when reading an essay.
 How to skim :Review your reading task, note any

changed print and graphics, start at the beginning and


glide your eyes over the text very quickly. You dont
actually read the text in total. You may read a few
words of every paragraph, perhaps the first and last
senrences.
SCANNING
 A strategy to read the detail information faster
 Ability to locate specific information (you know

what you are looking for)


 Sweeping your eyes (like radar) over part of a text

to find specific pieces of information


 How to scan: identify the part of the text that

probably contains the information you need, be


clear what it is you are looking for, scan the text, if
you catch an important words stop reading, read
the material close to this point.

SPEED OF READING
 The speeds are divided into three reading speeds:
slow, average, and fast.
 Slow: study reading speed is use when the

materials is diffcult or when high comprehension is


desired. The rate is 200-300 w.p.m, the
comprehension is 80-90%
 Average: reading speed is used to for every

reading of magazines,newspaper,and easiers


books. The rate is 250-500 w.p.m, the
comprehension is 70%
Fast:skimming is use when
the highest rate is desired
comprehension is
intentionally lower. The rate
is 80 w.p.m, the
comprehension is 50%
