INTRODUCTION

Plants, like humans, are living organisms that require materials from the
environment. As we know, they need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce
food and to fuel their metabolic processes.
But these are not the only things needed by plants to survive. Generally, plants
also need certain minerals to be healthy and survive.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS

These minerals that plants require for growth and development are referred to as
essential elements. It is important to put in mind that essential elements must be specific and
not replaceable by another element, i.e., deficiency of one element cannot be compensated
by supplying any other element. Every essential element, also, must have a specified role in
the plant’s metabolism (Arnon & Scott in 1939 and Meyer & Anderson in 1939, as cited by
Liu, Simmone, & Li, 2011).
ESSENTIAL
ELEMENTS
There are 17 essential
elements, and these are
classified into two groups of
essential elements: (1)
Macronutrients and (2)
Micronutrients.
MACRONUTRIENTS

Macronutrients are essential elements that plants need in

relatively huge amounts (Boundless, 2020). For instance, plants
must absorb high amounts of carbon and hydrogen from the
environment (carbon dioxide and water) to synthesize
photosynthates and to develop new structures. Otherwise, a plant
cannot develop properly and may die eventually (Mauseth, 2017).
MACRONUTRIENTS
Other macronutrients include:

Nitrogen Sulfur

Magnesium Phosphorous Oxygen

Calcium Potassium
MICRONUTRIENTS

Micronutrients, on the other hand, are elements that plants must get but strictly
in small amounts (Boundless, 2020). This is exemplified by iron wherein it is used for
synthesizing some enzymes (e.g., cytochrome P450 enzyme superfamily) and
pigments (e.g., chlorophyll), but excess amounts of it would hamper a plant’s
metabolic processes including photosynthesis (Rout & Sahoo, 2015; Kampfenkel, Van
Montagu, & Inze, 1995).
MICRONUTRIENTS
Other micronutrients are:

Copper Molybdenum

Iron

Manganese Nickel

Zinc
Chlorine Boron

SIGNS & EFFECTS OF
DEFICIANCIES AND
OVERABUNDANCE
CHLOROSIS

- loss of chlorophyll resulting in yellow or white

leaf tissue
- possible causes of chlorosis include poor
drainage, damaged roots, compacted roots, high
alkalinity, and nutrient deficiencies in the plant
- necrosis weakens the plant and
makes it more susceptible to other
diseases and pests.

NECROSIS
ANTHOCYANIN
FORMATION

- development of deep red pigmentation of

leaves or stem
- discoloration occurs on stems, petioles, and
lower leaf surfaces
- stunted growth, and development of
woody tissue in an herbaceous plant

STUNTED
GROWTH
OVERABUNDANCE OF
CERTAIN MINERALS
While mineral deficiencies can limit the growth of plants, an overabundance of
certain minerals can be toxic and can also limit growth
Saline soils, which have high concentrations of sodium chloride and other salts,
also limit plant growth, and research continues to focus on developing salt-tolerant
varieties of agricultural crops.
Research has focused on the toxic effects of heavy metals, such as lead,
cadmium, mercury, and aluminum; however, even copper and zinc, which are
essential elements, can become toxic in high concentrations
HYPER-
ACCUMULATORS
Hyperaccumulators are model plants for phytoremediation

Can tolerate the high amount of accumulated heavy metals

They can concentrate minerals at levels 100-fold or greater than normal

Other macronutrients include nitrogen,
oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, calcium,
potassium, and magnesium (Boundless,
2020).
