Introduction
The Lukut Museum was set up by the Department of
Museums and Antiquities (now Department of Museums
Malaysia) to display and disseminate information on the
history of Lukut from the early 19th century to 1880 when
Lukut became a part of Sungei Ujong district (Negeri
Sembilan). The museum building located on the eastern
side nearby Kota Lukut was completed in 1997.

Collection
The Lukut Museum showcases a collection about 200
pieces comprising ethnological artefacts. Interesting
pieces from the collections include: porcelain fragments
found during archeological excavation at the historic site of
Kota Lukut and cannons belonging to Raja Jumaat.

LUKUT MUSEUM
Location
The Lukut Museum located in Port Dickson, Negeri
Sembilan (about 80km) from the capital city of Malaysia,
Kuala Lumpur. Port Dickson is a popular beach
destination in the state of Negeri Sembilan, Peninsular
Malaysia.
HISTORY OF LUKUT
 Early 19th century records cite Lukut as a separate
district of Selangor besides other district such as Klang
and Bernam.

 Tengku Busu (Raja Busu) came to Lukut with his


followers from Sungai Selangor, Kedah and other states.

 Tin resources.

 Chinese miners, in large numbers to work the rich tin


fields of Lukut.

 Kapitan Chinese was appointed by Sultan Ibrahim and
Raja Busu.

 Levy; Dissatisfaction among the miners led to large scale


disturbances in September 1834.

 The arrival of Raja Jaafar bin Raja Ali, a Bugis Malay


from Riau along his sons Raja Jumaat and Raja Abdullah.

 1836 Sultan Muhammad, the third Sultan of Selangor


visited Lukut and declared it a sovereign territory of
Selangor.

 Raja Jumaat appointed as represented to Sultan
Muhammad.

 1846 - The Sultan handed over full control of Lukut and


the authority to collect all taxes to Raja Jumaat.

 Raja Jumaat’s wise ruler ship over Lukut ensured


continued prosperity and attracted more settlers there.

 1864 - Raja Bot succeeded his father, Raja Jumaat as


Representative of the Sultan at Lukut.

 1880 - A meeting was held in Singapore between Sultan
Abdul Samad (The 4th Sultan of Selangor), Raja Bot,
Dato' Kelana of Sungai Ujong as well as the British, in
which Selangor cedes the district of Lukut to Sungai
Ujong (which later became Negeri Sembilan).

Location: Bukit Gajah Mati/Bukit Raja

Built by Raja Jumaat 0n 1864.

The Fort is 172 yards long and 132 yard wide (rectangular)
and consists of an outer ditch between 10-15 feet deep.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH
 The archaeological research in Lukut Fort had been conducted
for three times since 1976 by the Department of Museums and
Antiquities.

 1976:
About 5 experimental mines that have a total area of 2 meters x 2
square meters with a depth of 10-30 cm have been excavated.

 1999:
The Department of Museums and Antiquities had appointed a
company to extract excavation of 30 square meters of 1 x 1
square meters in the central part of the fort which is in the hilly
area. The area is a palace site.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH
 Geoelectrical resistivity

 2002
The Department of Museums and Antiquities had
appointed another company to extract excavation in the
centre of the fort. A total of 300 trial tench have been dug
around the area. The excavation was based on the
geoelectrical resistivity study report conducted in 1999.
