INTRODUCTION

Hospital management information system are

comprehensive integrated information system designed to
manage the Medical, administrative, financial and legal
aspects of hospital and its service processing.
They are large complex computer systems designed to
help, communicate and manage the information needs of a
hospital.
DEFINITION
A hospital management information system is a
computer system that is designed to manage all the
hospitals medical and administrative information in
order to enable health professional perform their jobs
effectively & efficiently.
BENEFITS OF HIMS
 Easy access to patient data.
 It helps as a decision support system for the
hospital authorities for developing comprehensive
health care providers.
 Efficient and accurate administration of finances,
diet of patient, engineering and distribution of
medical aid.
Cont….

Improved monitoring of drug usage, study of

effectiveness.
Enhances information integrity, reduces
transcription errors, and reduces duplication of
information entries.
STANDARDS IMPLEMENTED IN HMIS

• Health level 7
• Digital imaging and communication in medicine
• Electronic data interchange for administration,
commerce and transport.
MODULES OF HMIS
 Appointment scheduling.
 admission, transfer & discharge.
 Ward management

 Pharmacy
 Laboratory information.
 Blood bank

 Dietary
 Patient billing

 Insurance & contract management

COMPONENTS OF HMIS
1.Clinical information system (CIS)

2.Financial information system (FIS)

3.Laboratory information system (LIS)
4.Nursing information system(NIS)

5.Pharmacy information system(PIS)

6.Picture archiving communication system (PACS)
7.Radiology information system (RIS)
1.CLINICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
It is a computer based system that is designed for
collecting, storing, manipulating & making available
clinical information important to the health care
delivery system.
It provides clinical data such as patients history of
illness and the interactions with care providers, patient
condition, treatment options & wellness activities.
2.FINANCIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
FIS are computer systems that manage the business
aspect of a hospital.
 Pay roll- maintaining employee pay rates,
entitlements, full salary movements & pay roll
histories.
 Patient accounting- financial transactions
generated during a patient visit to the
hospital.eg, inpatient and outpatient charges,
doctors fees, the cost of procedures, operations
&medications.
Cont…
 Accounts payable- handles the processing of
invoices & payments within the hospital.
 General ledger-gives current, accurate
maintenance and instant view of the financial
status of the hospital at any point of time.
 Claims management- manages all claims that
are made to insurance companies.
3. LABORATORY INFORMATION SYSTEM
The system manages laboratory information for all
the laboratory disciplines such as clinical chemistry,
hematology& microbiology. The other features,
 Patient management- details like admission
data, admitting physician & number maintained.
Also type of specimen, date and time of
collection& receipt also ordering physician &
dept etc.
 Decision support- lab orders can be cross
referred by classification codes such as ICD-9
and LONIC
Cont...
 Patient tracking-patient tests can be catalogued
and called up when the need to review comes
up.
 Quality assurance- ensure the tests carried out
using the available standards.
 Management reporting.
4.NURSING INFORMATION SYSTEM

NIS are computer systems that manage clinical data from

a variety of health care events, made available in a timely &
orderly manner to aid nurses in improving patient care.

Some of the features are

 Patient charting-patient vital signs, admission &
nursing assessments, care plan & nursing notes
can be entered & retrieved.
Cont...
 Staff schedule- nurses can self schedule their shifts.
 Clinical data integration- clinical information from
all the disciplines can be retrieved, viewed and
analyzed by nursing staff& then integrated into a
pt’s care plan.
 Benefits – less time spent in designing roasters.

improved workload functionality.

better care planning.
5. PHARMACY INFORMATION SYSTEM

PIS are designed to meet the needs of a pharmacy

dept.
• Clinical screening- assist in patient care by the
monitoring of drug interactions , drug allergies and
other possible medication related complications.
6. PICTURE ARCHIVING
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
PACS is a term describe a set of systems that facilitate the
archiving, processing & viewing of digital radiological images &
their related information.

The images are acquired, archived and retrieved over a network

for diagnosis and review by physicians.
With advancements of the DICOM & HL7 standard put PACS
alongside radiological information system as an ideal solution for
managing radiological images.
Cont…

some of these images include,

• x-ray photos
• Retinoscopy

• Computed tomography
• Magnetic resonance imaging

• Radio isotope
• ultrasound
BENEFITS OF PACS

• Helps to ease consultations between physicians who

can now simultaneously access same images over
networks, leading to a better diagnosis.

• It is also beneficial to physicians in emergency

situations, as they need not wait for long periods.

• Digitally enhanced images gives more detailed and

sharper images.
7. RADIOLOGY INFORMATION SYSTEM

• A RIS is a computer system that assists radiology

services in the storing, manipulation and retrieving of
information. some features are,
• Patient management-used to manage a patients entire
workflow within radiology dept., images and report
scan added to and retrieved from electronic medical
records.
• Scheduling- patient appointments for IP & OP.
Cont...

• Patient tracking- the patient can be tracked from

admission to discharge.
• Results reporting.
• Film tracking-individual films can be traced
HEALTH CARE SOFTWARE
Software packages and application licensed under an
open sources license or in the public domain for use in
the health care industry.
CATEGORIES
o public health & bio surveillance
o Patient record
o Electronic health or medical record
o Medical practice management software
o Health system management
o Research
o Mobile devices
ROLE OF COMPUTERS IN NURSING CARE
• Admission, discharge and transfer

ADT system allows nurses to obtain basic biographical

information on clients before they arrive to the unit.
• Bed side data entry

Records nursing assessment, clients care plan,

medication administration, nursing notes, progress notes,
client acuity and accrued charges etc.
• Computer based client record

Nurses use technologies to perform routine health

checkups such as ECG, oxygen levels, blood
pressure, vital signs. Results are accurate & readily
available for other staffs involved in the patients
treatment.
• Communication and sharing information

Eliminates misinterpretation of verbal and written

order.
Cont…

• Inventory tracking
• Tele nursing
• Client monitoring
• scheduling
CONCLUSION

Hospital information systems can be used to improve

the effectiveness of patient care while making it more
economical.
Clinical nurses can use their nursing information
system to replace manual systems of data recording.
