Energy, Heat, and Temperature

3rd Grade
Heat & Temperature
• Heat: the transfer of energy from one part of a
substance to another, or from one body to
another, because of a difference in
temperature.
– Heat from 1 substance flows to a different
substance with a lower temperature to raise the
2nd substance’s temperature.
Heat vs. Temperature
• When the degree of hotness- or temperature- of
something increases, its molecules go faster and
expand.
• When the temperature decreases the molecules
move slowly and contract.
– Expansion and contraction can be used to measure
temperature itself.
– A device that does this is called a thermometer.
Heat vs. Temperature
 Degree of hotness(temperature) only depends
on speed. It has nothing to do with how many
molecules there are.
 Quantity of hotness(heat) depends on mass and
speed.

Thermal Energy
• Energy of moving particles
• Moves as heat from a warmer object  cooler
object
What will happen to the spoon after it is hot in the liquid for a while?
Heat Sources
1. Burning matches
2. Natural gas
3. Sun
4. Friction
What is Heat Energy?
• A form of energy that is transferred by a
difference in temperature.
How can heat be transferred?
• Conduction: the transfer of heat between 2 parts of a
stationary system, caused by a temperature difference
between the parts.

• Convection: the transfer of heat by the movement of heated

parts of a liquid or gas

• Radiation: the transfer of heat and energy from one point to

another, such as boiling water, or the sun.
