Core Principles, Strands, and Guiding Questions
INQUIRY:
How do we use the tools of inquiry within the STEM disciplines to teach and
learn for understanding?
IDENTITY:
How do our personal identities impact our STEM teaching identities and our
relationships with students, families, colleagues and communities?
EQUITY
How can we create STEM learning communities that nurture excellence,
equity, and high expectations for all students?
COLLABORATION
How can our cohort build and sustain a personal and professional STEM
learning community and build strong partnerships with schools, families and
communities?
REFLECTIVE PRACTICE AND PRAXIS
How can we engage in critical reflection in order to continually improve our
knowledge, skills, and dispositions and to empower students to be creative
problem solvers and active citizens in a democracy?
Goal IV: Continued
Teacher Excellence

The School of Science leads a national initiative in High School Biomedical Sciences.
PLTW Biomedical Sciences: School of Science, IUPUI – since 2006 (Jeff Watt)
PLTW Engineering: IU-Kokomo, School of Engineering & Technology (Charlie Feldhaus)

IUPUI is one of only three national teacher training sites. 250 high school teachers from 32
states have become master teachers in a four-course biomedical sciences elective track.
