Talk Test

Method
BERNHANN NICOLAS
JOHN JORAN REYES JR.
WHAT IS TALK TEST METHOD?
The talk test is a simple way to measure relative
intensity. In general, if you're doing moderate-intensity
activity, you can talk but not sing during the activity. In
general, if you're doing vigorous-intensity activity, you will
not be able to say more than a few words without
pausing for a breath.
Is the Talk Test Method reliable?

The talk test is a valid, reliable, practical and

inexpensive tool for prescribing and monitoring
exercise intensity in competitive athletes, healthy
active adults and patients with cardiovascular
disease.
What are the benefits of the Talk Test Method?

The idea behind the talk test is that the harder you

work, the more breathless you become and the harder
it is to talk. By monitoring that, you can determine
whether you're working at a lower intensity, a moderate
intensity—which is the minimum you want to work
during cardio—and a high intensity.
Methods on how to do the Talk Test Method?

•During your workout, Ask yourself if you can speak comfortably. If the
answer is yes, you're at a low intensity. If the answer is no, you're at or
above a Level 5 intensity.
•During your workout, count again during your exhale and compare those
numbers. If the number counted during exercise drops to about 70
percent, you're working at or above Level 5.
•You can use a heart rate monitor to make sure you're working in your
target heart rate zone.
