INTRODUCTION
1 The strength of the Roman was one of the main reason why they
became so large and powerful.

2 It was the largest army in the world at this time.

3 Roman soldiers were highly trained.

4 They were well organised and had the best weapons and equipment.

5 Who was the Roman army? What uniform did the soldiers wore?
What was their training like?
WHO COULD BE A SOLDIER?
1 Only men are allowed in the Roman army.

2 There were 2 main types of Roman soldiers:

a) Legionaries
b) Auxiliaries

3 The best soldiers were called legionaries.


LEGIONARIES
1 Had to be a Roman citizen.

2 Means he has to own a property or farm.

3 Had to be tall and fit.

4 Had to be literate. (able to read and write)

5 Must be over 17 years old.

6 Stayed in the army for at least 20 years.


AUXILIARY
1 Was not a Roman citizen.

2 Recruited from tribes that had been conquered by the Romans.

3 Was not paid as much as a legionary.

4 Had to serve the army for at least 25 years.

5 Did most of the dangerous jobs.

6 They fought in the front lines in a battle.


WHAT UNIFORMS DID THE SOLDIERS WEAR?
1 Were designed to protect his body.

2 Were designed to help him survive for a long periods of time on


military campaigns.
FITNESS AND FIGHTING
1 They were very fit.

2 Could march 32 kms in 5 hours.

3 They wore all their armour and carried their weapons and
equipment while they marched.

4 They practised sword-fighting and javelin-throwing every day.

5 They could cook, swim, sail boats and build bridges.


6 Discipline was very strict in the Roman army.

7 Soldiers could be executed if they failed to follow orders.

8 Refer page 13 on a legionary’s uniform and equipment.

2 ‘Villa’ is a Latin word.

3 Means large house in the country surrounded by its own


grounds and other buildings.
WHO LIVED IN VILLAS?
1 Some important and wealthy Romans decided to move out of the
towns and build villas nearby.

2 Soon there were hundreds of villas all over the Roman Empire.

3 The villas were surrounded by farmland and workshops for iron-


making and pottery.

4 The villas were luxurious.


5 The owners lived in a main building of the villas.

6 The slaves and farm workers lived in one of the smaller


buildings.

7 The slaves and workers helped run the estate.
