What is
sustainable
development
?
Sustainable development
Simply put, Sustainable Development is the
idea that human societies must live and meet
their needs without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs.

Achieve Sustainable development
through…

• The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United

Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and
prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart
are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent
call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global
partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations
must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education,
reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate
change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
Sustainable development

• Among the popular definitions of sustainable development, the most

widely used is that it is a “development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs as cited by the World Commission on Environment and
Development (commonly known as the Brundtland Commission, 1987).
How does
one country
achieve
sustainable
development
?
Sustainable development

• The aim of sustainable development is to balance our economic,

environmental and social needs, allowing prosperity for now and future
generations. Sustainable development consists of a long-term, integrated
approach to developing and achieving a healthy community by jointly
addressing economic, environmental, and social issues, whilst avoiding
the over consumption of key natural resources.

Canada

• The development of the tar sands poses an existential threat to the

boreal forests. Tar sands oil is not pumped out of the ground but
mined in a manner similar to coal. And like the mountaintop
removal practiced by coal miners, tar sands mining requires the
clear cutting of the boreal forest. It is this double carbon hit –
carbon released when the forest is clear cut and then again when
the oil is burned – that helps to make tar sands oil the dirtiest of
fuels.
Australia

• Australia’s wildlife is in a poor state and its condition is

worsening, with “81 ecosystems, 511 terrestrial and aquatic
animal species and 1,355 plant species” listed as threatened at the
national level.
United States of
America

• The U.S. does well on the economy yet scores badly gender and
income inequality (SDGs 5 and 10), unsustainable consumption
and production (SDG12), taking climate and environment action
(SDGs 13 to 15), ensuring peace and security at home and abroad
(SDG16), and in supporting the SDGs themselves (SDG17).
Is
sustainable
development
possible in
developing
countries?
Sustainable development remains a distant hope from many
developing countries.

Why?

Managing urbanization and poverty is essential to achieving

sustainable development.
Sustainable development

• The main challenges to sustainable development which are global in

character include poverty and exclusion, unemployment, climate change,
conflict and humanitarian aid, building peaceful and inclusive societies,
building strong institutions of governance, and supporting the rule of law.
