Chapter 8 part 2:

Bone Development
Osteogenesis
•2 mechanisms
• Intramembranous ossification
• Osteoblasts differentiate directly
from embryonic tissue
• Endochondral ossification
• Hyaline cartilage forms early
skeletal framework
• As development proceeds, cartilage
is eroded and replaced by
osteoblasts
Intramembranous
Ossification
• Begins within membranes in
embryonic tissues
• Skull, mandibles, scapula, clavicle
• Embryonic tissue condenses,
differentiates into osteoblasts
• Osteoid (early bone fibers) secreted,
calcifies into bone
• Groups of osteoblasts and bone grow,
fusing with one another and maturing
into compact and cancellous bone
Intramembranous
Ossification
Osteoclasts
• Motile
• Multi-nucleated, large
• Similar to macrophages
(derived from
monocytes in marrow)
• Mostly found in
cancellous bone
Endochondral
Ossification
• Small “models” of adult
bones are formed of
cartilage
• Endochondral ossification
is the method of
osteogenesis for most
bones in the body
• Easiest to see in long bones
