MAP PROJECTION USED IN

MALAYSIA
• In Malaysia, the construction and production of official maps has been entrusted to JUPEM
• Many small-scale maps covering the entire country and state are issued by JUPEM. Examples of
administrative maps and physical features.
• Among the projection maps used in Malaysia are:
-Cassini Soldner
-Rectified Skew Orthomorphic (RSO)
CASSINI SOLDNER

• Cassini Soldner map projection used for cadastral

map (land lot).
• It is suitable for large-scale mapping of areas near the
central meridian. (Transverse cylinder projection)
• Therefore in Malaysia this projection has its own
origin for almost every state to maintain the correct
scale. In other words each state has its own
coordinate system or grid
• Since each state has its own Cassini Soldner coordinate system, then basically different state
cadastral maps cannot be merged if using Cassini Soldner projections.
• This has made it difficult to create a national land base, especially with the rapid development of
the use of geographical information systems in Malaysia.Cassini Soldner
• One alternative is to convert this projection to RSO projection which is the national projection
system.
• However this conversion process will usually introduce distortions or errors in the resulting map
RECTIFIED SKEW ORTHOMORPHIC (RSO)
• Projected True Oblique Shape (RSO) is a national coordinate system used in Malaysia,
Singapore and Brunei.
• As it is built specifically for a particular country (as a national grid) then its use is limited to the
area only.
• So the Malaysian RSO projection system is not the same as the projections built for other
countries because their origins and parallel lines are different.
