Congestive Heart

Failure (CHF)
Congestive heart failure
 Is a condition in whichthe heart is unable to pump blood
around the body properly. It usually occurs because the
heart has become too weak or stiff.

Heart failure does not mean your heart has stopped

working. It just needs some support to help it work better.
Two types of congestive heart failure

Right-sided heart failure- the right ventricle of the

heart is too weak to pump enough blood to the lungs

Left-sided heart failure- the left ventricle of the

heart no longer pumps enough blood around the body
Left-sided heart failure
Is a heart condition where the muscle on the left side of the heart is diminished and the pump doesn't
work to the body.
 The common type of heart failure
Causes
 Coronary artery disease – where the arteries that supply blood
to the heart become clogged up with fatty
substances (atherosclerosis) which may cause angina  or
a heart attack

 High blood pressure – this can put extra strain on the heart,
which over time can lead to heart failure
Risk Factors
 Age

Race

Obesity /overweight

Family history

Congenital heart defects
