DEFORMATION

THIS IS THE CHANGE IN OBJECT THAT

CANNOT MOVE DUE TO FORCE BEING
APPLIED. THE OBJECT EITHER STRETCHES OR
COMPRESSES.

HOOKES LAW
• The extension of a spring is directly
proportional to the load or force applied,
provided that the elastic limit is not exceeded.
• For all materials, there is a point called the
limit of proportionality, beyond which Hooke's
law Is not obeyed.
• If a material is stretched further than this
point, it reaches its elastic limit. Further
stretching may cause the a material to break.
Force-extension graphs
Example
• A rubber band is 14.5cm long. When a mass of 120g is attached to one end, it stretches to 17.5cm. If the
band obeys Hooke's law, F=kx where x is the extension, what is the constant k?
