Output hypothesis

Developed by Merrill Swain

Output indicates the outcome of what the student
has learned (1980) .
Output hypothesis states that it is the action of
producing language which develops part of the
process of second language learning (Swain, 1985).
Output hypothesis

States that learning takes place when a learner

encounters a gap in his or her linguistic knowledge
of the second language (L2)

The prince decided to be a wise king

starting from that day

The learner becomes aware and may be able to

modify his or her output and learns something new
about the language.
Output hypothesis

The output hypothesis states that we acquire a

language when we attempt to transmit a message but
fail and have to try again.
Eventually, we arrive at the correct form of our
utterance and we acquire the new form we have
produced.
According to Swain, constant practice facilitates the
learner to be conscious of his or her production.
Output hypothesis

Feedback is important, especially, because it is one

of the few settings in which students have a contact
to the target language and they need advices and
corrections for improving their production.
Output facilitates second language learning by
enhancing those of input.
