A Noun Clause

What is a noun clause?
The function of Noun Clauses :
• Like any noun, a noun clause can function as a subject, an object, or a complement.
• Here are some more easy examples of noun clauses as subjects, objects, and
complements.
• 1. The noun clause as a subject.
• Example : Whoever smelt it dealt it.
• 2. The noun clause as an object
• Example : I want to buy whatever I need it.
• 3. The noun clause as a complement. (pelengkap)
• Example : An English Dictionary is what we need to translate this book.
Other examples :

• What he explained last night is difficult to understand.


• I don’t know what his favorite food is
• I never know how much of what he says is true.
• (This noun clause is an object of a preposition.)
• His one regret in life is that he is not someone else
Patterns of noun clauses :
1.Using Wh / Hw Question
• Such as : what, when, where, who, why dan how.
• Pattern : Wh / Hw + S + V +(O) +etc
• Examples :
• Why she cried is not understandable
• I + know + where she lives now.
• Pen and books are what they bought last night.
2. Use if / whether:
• Examples :
• Does she come here?
• I don’t know if she comes here or not.
• Does she attend the meeting?
• I don’t remember whether she attends the meeting or not.
3. The form is always a statement
• a. The subclause begins with that.
• B. The main clause begins with a verb, such as : assume, believe, discover,
dream, guess, hear, hope, know, learn, notice, predict, prove, realize, remember,
suppose, suspect dan think.
• examples: 
• I have to remember that my main goal is to graduate from college this year.
• I believe that this pandemic will be over one day.
Exercises :I. Identify the following sentences by underlined it and mention what the
function is.

• Example : The child tells us why he felt so sad. (N C as an object)


• 1.When the man came here none knows.
• 2. We order what we need for the party.
• 3. That he is not interested in the offer is known to us.
• 4. He said that he was not feeling well.
• 5. I cannot rely on what he says.
• 6. I don’t know where he has gone.
• 7. He asked whether the servant had polished his shoes.
• 8. The news that he is alive has been confirmed.
• 9. I wondered if she is from New Zealand.
• 10. We are not responsible for what they are talking about.
II.Combine the two sentences using noun clauses

• Example:
I don’t know. What kind of flower is this?
Answer : I don’t know what kind of flower this is.
1. My father don’t remember. How tall is my brother.
Answer : ………
2. He thinks. Why is the price of daily food getting higher and
higher.
