Nuclear Energy

Aleksandr Zinkevich 1MT

What is nuclear energy?
А field of technology based on the use
of the fission reaction of atomic nuclei
to generate heat and generate
electricity. In 1990, nuclear power
plants of the world produced 16% of
electricity. Such power plants
operated in 31 countries and were
built in 6 more countries.
The first nuclear reactor,
named SR-1, was built in
Firsts nuclear reactors
December 1942 in the United
The F-1 installation became the first
States under the leadership of
nuclear reactor in Europe. It was
E. Fermi. launched on December 25, 1946 in
Moscow under the leadership of I. V.
Kurchatov
Advantages of nuclear energy

• Reducing the greenhouse effect

• Huge energy intensity

• Economic development

• Reuse
The intensive development of nuclear power can be
considered one of the means of combating global warming.
For example, nuclear power plants in Europe annually avoid
the emission of 700 million tons of Carbon dioxide

1 kilogram of uranium enriched up to 4%, used in nuclear fuel,

when completely burned up, releases energy equivalent to
burning about 100 tons of high-quality coal or 60 tons of oil.

The construction of a nuclear power plant ensures economic

growth, the emergence of new jobs: 1 job during the
construction of a nuclear power plant creates more than 10
jobs in related industries.

Fissile material (uranium-235) does not completely burn out in

nuclear fuel and can be used again after regeneration (in
contrast to ash and organic fuel slags).
Waste from nuclear reactors remains
radioactive for many years.
Disadvantages
of nuclear
Falling into the wrong hands of fissile nuclear
materials can provoke nuclear terrorism or
energy
blackmail.

Mining and enrichment of uranium can expose

personnel involved in these operations to
radioactive dust, and also result in the release of
this dust into the air or water.
But not always was perferct and nuclear
reactors worked for people’s blessing
On the night of April 25-
26, 1986, happened one
of the most famous
disasters in human
history. As a result of an
unsuccessful production
experiment, the 4th
power unit of the
Chernobyl nuclear
power plant exploded.
Fact
Currently, according to the International Atomic Energy
Agency, there are 441 reactors in 30 countries in the
world. 44 more reactors are also under construction.
Nuclear energy applications
At present, of all sources of nuclear
energy, the energy released during
the fission of heavy nuclei has the
greatest practical application. In the
face of a shortage of energy
resources, nuclear power at fission
reactors is considered the most
promising in the coming decades.
