What is adjectives?

• Adjectives are word that are used to clarify a


noun.

• Adjectives can me one word or a group of words.

• Adjectives are sometimes used with certain


verbs (such as the verb "to be"). Adjectives are
used to clarify the subject that is doing the action.

• Adjectives are used to describe colour, material,


shape, size, amount, price, quality, origin,
personality, weight, temperature, weight, age,
direction, etc.
Adjectives usage
Adjectives are placed before the noun.

Adjectives can be used with all forms of nouns (see nouns).

Examples:

Adjectives with nouns:

* My teacher is really nice.


* I was teaching in a really big high school, while I was
going working my master's degree.
* The university that my oldest brother is going to is really
nice.
* The English teacher gave us a hard project.

Adjective with verbs:

* The teacher is tall and thin.


* Our professor is a really nice man.
Descriptive adjectives
To describe the quality of a person or thing, for example, its size, age, shape,
colour, material, origin, purpose.

Example:

a blue bag a square a long pencil a rainy day

a pink rose a circular tray a small car a sunny day


Quantitative adjectives

To indicate the number or amount of things

examples:

I want three pencils.


she want to buy some rice.
Demonstrative adjectives

To point out nouns. The are: this, these, that, those.

examples:

This is my friends, Zill.


These are my parents.
That is Mt Kinabalu
Interrogative adjectives
To ask questions: which, what, whose.

Examples:

Which dress is yours?


Whose house is this?
Possessive adjectives

To show possession. They are: my, your, his, her, our, their, its.

examples:

This is my cat.
This your plate of rice.
That is his table.
They are eating their prey.
Distributive adjectives

To show that the persons or things are counted collectively.


The include: each, every.

examples:

Each boy was given an apple.


Every house was lit up with candles.
Compound adjectives

These are made up of two or more words.

Examples:

The bag is made of lightweight material.


That is a duty-free shop.
The secretary is wearing a pair of high-heeled shoes.
Adjectives are compared in degrees of positive,comparative and superlative.

The positive form is used to make a comparison of two equal persons of


things.As…as is usually used.

examples:

-Suzana is as thin as Jenny.


-I am as serious as my mother.
The comparative form is used to make a comparison between two unequal
persons or things.The word than is used in the comparative form.

examples:

-The boy is taller than his sister.


-My shoes is larger than his.
The superlative form is used to make a comparison between three or more
unequal things or persons.The word the is usually used in the superlative
form.

examples:

-Nora is the fairest in the class.


-Nizar is the quiestest in his family.
