The New Norm for the Oil and Gas Industry

How can it Benefit the Oil and Gas
Industry have Key Personnel working
from Home

Within the Oil and Gas Industry there are

many Expat Office Workers that might be
considered Operations Support
Operations Support Working from Home
Pro’s and Con’s

The Pro’s
 The main benefit in having Expat Operations Support
Personnel based in the Office is that there is a direct
contact between the Offshore Operations and
Onshore Coordinators.
 They are able to contact local materials suppliers,
organize specialist contractors, expedite delivery via
choppers or supply boats. In short whatever is
required Offshore is directly supported by the
Onshore Support Team.

The Con’s
 The disadvantage’s of having Expat Operations Support based
in the Office are many:-
 They Cost a lot of money and command high salaries.
 They need rotational air flights.
 They need work permits that also cost money and need
time to process.
 They need accommodation.
 They need transport or drivers
 They need medical insurance.
 In many countries there are Covid 19 travel restrictions.
 They are available outside office hours and even at
weekends.

Pro’s and Con’s
The Big Question, Do the Pro’s
Outweigh the Con’s

 On reflection it would seem that the answer is

obviously no there are big savings and big
advantages in working remotely.
Specific Tasks that would be Suitable for
Work from Home

Because of my background I am thinking specifically of Asset Integrity, for instance

an operating company may have 2 or more FPSO’s in the same Country, if each
FPSO has their own Expat Office based Asset Integrity Engineer that works out a
very expensive proposition.
Alternatively if the company would hire local graduate engineers who could be
rotating between Office and Offshore they can be the boots on the ground feeding
back information to the Remote Asset Integrity Engineer this would be a much less
expensive proposition, only 1 x Remote Asset Integrity Engineer can cover several
Facilities, the Local Content of the companies employees is increased and the local
graduate engineers benefit from coaching and mentoring from the experienced
Engineer. The Remote Engineer has no formal office hours which makes him more
reachable than a support engineer who may or may not always be at his desk.
In these days distance is no problem, Zoom or Skype meetings offer a virtual face to
face conversation, screens can be shared and meetings can be recorded. There is
WhatsApp so phone calls cost nothing.
