Cyclone
- also called typhoon or hurricane
- an intense circular storm that originates over warm
tropical oceans
- characterized by low atmospheric pressure, high
winds, and heavy rain
- generic term for a non-frontal synoptic scale low-
pressure system over tropical or sub-tropical waters
with organized convection and definite cyclonic
surface wind circulation (Holland 1993)

Severe tropical storm Ulysses traverses over the Philippine area of responsibility as it
moves west at 20 kph in this image spotted by Himawari-8 satellite on Wednesday
morning. Ulysses is forecast to intensify into a typhoon within the next 6-12 hours and
reach its peak intensity of 130-155 km/h prior to its forecast landfall over Polillo Islands
and mainland Quezon between Wednesday night and Thursday early morning, according
to PAGASA.
INTERNATIONAL
NEWS
Tropical Cyclone Eloise spun across the Mozambique Channel in mid-January and is now
poised to move inland over East African countries.
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite acquired
this image of the cyclone at 12:50 p.m. local time in Mozambique (1050 Universal Time)
on January 22, 2021. Around this time, the storm had maximum sustained winds of about
65 knots (75 miles/120 kilometers per hour)—equivalent to a category 1 storm on the
Saffir-Simpson wind scale.
According to news reports, Eloise has the potential to strengthen even more, leading to
flooding and damage across areas that were devastated by Tropical Cyclone Idai in March
2019.
