Ocean Cleanup has

launched the largest project

to clean the ocean of plastic
Ocean Cleanup has launched its first test system for
collecting plastic waste in the Pacific Ocean from San
Francisco.
Startup founder Boyan Slat showed his vision for the 2019
ocean cleaning project by introducing a system consisting
of floating barriers that use natural ocean currents to
collect garbage.
It is currently a 600-meter line of flexible
beams with a meter-long underwater net
that collects debris that can then be lifted
and removed by ships accompanying the
system.
It is reported that the system will first be tested for
two weeks at an intermediate stop off the coast,
after which it will go to the Great Pacific Garbage
Spot, which is located off the coast and is larger
than the area of Texas. The system is equipped with
sensors and cameras, so the team will be able to
closely monitor its efficiency and further improve its
design.
HOWEVER, THE SYSTEM HAS SOME
DRAWBACKS: IT IS UNKNOWN HOW IT WILL
AFFECT THE OCEAN FAUNA OR HOW THE
PIPES WILL SURVIVE THE STORM.
