Parable of

Unfruitful Fig
Tree
[Luke 13:6-10]
LUKE 13:6-10
6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his
vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I

come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why
cumbereth it the ground?
8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall

dig about it, and dung it:

9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

A parable that…
1. Calls for the spirit of repentance
2. Speaks of the personal experience of
Jesus of 3 years preaching
3. Prophetic
A PROPHETIC PARABLE
1. The mindset of many people in
understanding that suffering is the result of
sinfulness. They had wrongly missed that all
things as of now is the reality of “evil of
human nature”
ROMANS 7:18,24
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth
18

no good thing:

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me

from the body of this death?
ROMANS 8:22-23
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and
travaileth in pain together until now.

23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the

firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within
ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of
our body.
A PROPHETIC PARABLE
2. On the Galileans:
- Their sacrifices in the
temple is mingled with
their blood
3. On dwellers in Jerusalem
- The wall (like the tower of
Siloam) fell and killed many
of them
Heed Jesus’ warning in Luke 21:19-24
19 In your patience possess ye your souls.
20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the

desolation thereof is nigh.

21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in

the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.
22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for

there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all

nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the
Gentiles be fulfilled.
As a prophetic parable, our lesson would be on Paul’s
words in Romans 15:4
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were
written for our learning, that we through patience and
comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
• Comfort of Scripture- the surety of
prophetical words to come to pass
• The Longsuffering of God- giving time and
opportunity to bear fruit of repentance
The precursor of Jesus, John the Baptist offered a
lesson for us. He clearly said in Luke 3: 9

9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every
tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn
down, and cast into the fire.
LUKE 3:10
And the people asked him, saying,
10

What shall we do then?

LUKE 3:8
8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance,
and begin not to say within yourselves, We have
Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That
God is able of these stones to raise up children
unto Abraham.
VII- He that hath two coats, let him impart to him
that had none and he that hath meat let him do
likewise…
