What is Communication?
Communication is a Latin originated word,
meaning of which is sharing. 

• "Communication is the exchange and flow of information


and ideas from one person to another; it involves a sender
transmitting an idea, information, or feeling to a receiver."
-Fred G. Meyer.
Methods of Communication:
• Verbal communication

• Nonverbal communication

• Written communication
Verbal Communication
• According to Bovee ,
“Verbal communication is the expression of
information through language which is composed of
words and grammar.”

• Verbal communication refers to the use of sounds and


language to relay a message.
Verbal communication takes place through different modes
such as :
Face-to-face conversations, Group discussions, Counseling,
Interview, Radio, Calls, etc.
Nonverbal Communication
 According to Robert Rosenthal,
“Nonverbal communication is communication and
interpretation of information by any means other
than language. Nonverbal communication includes
communication through any expressive channel of
communication such as facial expression, bodily
movement, vocal tone and pitch, and many other
channel”
 "Judee Burgoon” (1994) has identified 6
different nonverbal dimensions:

1. Body movements including facial expressions


and eye contact.
2. Vocalics that includes volume, rate and pitch.
3. Personal appearance.
4. Chronemics or time
5. Proxemics or personal space.
6. Haptics or touch.

• Proxemics is the study of how humans use space
when communicating. 

• There are four kinds of distance that people generally


use in communication.

• Derived from greek work ‘Haptikos’ meaning
“Sense of Touch”.
• It is a form of nonverbal communication & the
way by which people communicate via
touching

• According to Ricky W. Griffin,
“Written communication is the message that is
encoded and transmitted in written form.”

• Written communication has great significance in


today’s business world, as it is essential for
preparing worthy promotional materials for
business development.
• Some of the various forms of written
communications that are used internally for
business operations include:

o Memos
o Reports
o Bulletins
o Job descriptions
o Employee manuals
o Emails
o Instant messages
• Examples of written communications
generally used with clients or other
businesses include:

o Email
o Internet websites
o Letters
o Telegrams
o Faxes
o Advertisements
o Brochures
