Classroom Management - Practicum

Procedures/Rules

What is the difference between Classroom

Rules and Classroom Procedures?
• The basis of classroom management lies in the
procedures that form a management plan to
produce the successful achievement of learning
goals.
• Procedures are the tasks students must do to
increase their chances for learning and achieving.
• A routine is a procedure that students do repeatedly
without any prompting or supervision.
Procedures

• Procedures are concerned with how things are

done.
• The number one problem in the classroom is not
discipline. Most problems in the classroom are
procedure related; they are NOT discipline
problems.
• It is much easier-and far more effective to monitor
and correct procedures than to institute tighter
discipline.
• Effective teachers teach their students how to be
responsible for appropriate procedures.
• Procedures teach students responsible skills that
serve them well in school and throughout life.
• Procedures organize the classroom so the activities
that take place can function smoothly in a stress-
free manner. Students perform better when they
know what the teacher expects them to do.
Think: Peanut Butter and Jelly!

Hand-Washing Procedures
1. Turn on the water.
2. Get 1 squirt of soap.
3. Wash and rinse hands.
4. Push button 2 times for paper towel.
5. Turn off water and put paper towel in garbage can.
How to Teach a Procedure

• A well-managed, smooth-running class depends on

the teacher’s ability to teach procedures.

• Procedures MUST be practiced, and become

routines.
The Three Steps for Teaching Procedures

• TEACH
• REHEARSE
• REINFORCE
• Teach-Explain and model the procedure for the
class.
• Rehearse-Students practice the procedure.
• Reinforce-Encourage students to follow procedures.
Teach and reteach if necessary.
The Start of Class Routine

• A routine is a process or action that is done

automatically with no prompting. A morning routine
is what students do on their own to prepare for
class to start.
Procedures

• Taking Attendance
• Dismissing the Class
• Collecting Notes and Forms
• Classroom Tardiness
• Absent Folder
• Organizing Homework
