Introduction
Fitness is the ability to live a full and balanced life. The
totally fit person has a healthy and happy outlook towards
life. Fitness is the every human being’s absolute necessity. It
breeds self- reliance and keeps man mentally alert.
Physical fitness is essential for human being to adjust well
with his environment as his mind and body are in complete
harmony. It is generally agreed that physical fitness is an
important part of the normal growth and development of a
child to adult, a generic definition regarding the precise
nature of physical fitness has not been universally accepted.
Some definitions
• Physical fitness is a state of health and well-being and, more specifically, the ability
to perform aspects of sports, occupations and daily activities. Physical fitness is
generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate-vigorous physical exercise,
and sufficient rest. ( wikipedia)

• It is found that physical fitness is not a static factor and it varies from individual to
individual and in the same person from time to time depending on factors.
(Clarke and Clarke - 1989)

• The United States president’s Council on physical fitness and sports defined the
terms “physical fitness as the ability to carry out daily task with vigor and
alertness, without undue fatigue, with ample energy to enjoy leisure time pursuits
and to meet unforeseen emergencies”

• Muscle strength : The ability of a muscle or muscle group to exert a
maximum force against a resistance one time through the full range of
motion.
• Muscle endurance : The ability of a muscle or muscle group to exert a
sub-maximul force repeatedly over a period of time.
• Cardiovascular endurace : The ability to perform large muscle moderate
to high intensity exercise for prolonged periods keeping our heart rate in
the target zone.
• Flexibility : The ability to move a joint through its complete range of
motion.
• Body composition : ………is the amount of lean body mass compared with
the amount of body fat.
Skill related fitness
• Agility : Ability to move and change direction quickly
• Speed : Amount of distance travelled in ove direction in
comparison to time.
• Reaction time : Time between stimulus-response
• Coordination : Putting relevant motor programs in
correct order
• Balance : Ability to maintain equilibrium
• Power : Ability to exert maximum muscular contraction
instantly in an explosive burst of movements.

The FITT formula is made up for four important
parts of fitness training, frequency, time and
type. For exercise to be effective, it must be
done enough times per week(frequency), hard
enough (intensity), and for long enough (time).
Finally the kind (type) of exercise is important.
