The
Photoshop
Workspace
Menu bar - You will probably
already be familiar with the menu
bar from other programs. This runs
across the top of your Photoshop
window, and contains various menu
options for Photoshop’s tools.
Toolbox - By default, the toolbox
sits to the left of your Photoshop
window, and contains shortcuts to
Photoshop tools.
Options bar - The options bar sits
beneath the menu bar and holds
contextualized options for different
tools. It also contains the workspace
menu, where you can save and load
arrangements of palettes.
Palettes - Individual “panes” that hold
information or options for working with
your file, known as palettes (or panels),
float on the right-hand side. Each
palette is labeled with a tab, and can be
minimized, closed, grouped with other
palettes, or dragged in and out of a
panel dock.
Palettes

• Below is the description of the most commonly used palettes in Adobe Photoshop:-
Color
• The Color palette: displays the current foreground and background colors and RGB values
for these colors. You can use the sliders to change the foreground and background colors in
different color modes. You can also choose a color from the
Swatches
• In the Swatches palette : you can choose a foreground or background color and add a
customized color to the library.
Layers
• Layers let you organize your work into distinct levels that can be edited and viewed as
individual units.
• Every Photoshop document contains at least one layer.
PS File formats

1. A .PSD file is a layered image file used in Adobe Photoshop. PSD, which stands for
Photoshop Document, is the default format that Photoshop uses for saving data.  PSD
is a proprietary file that allows the user to work with the images’ individual layers even
after the file has been saved.

2. The JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) format has been around for nearly 20
years now and has become the most popular and widely used file format for viewing
and sharing digital photos.

3. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was originally meant to replace the GIF format
(PNG also stands for "PNG not GIF"). That never happened and GIF files are still in
wide use today, yet the PNG format improves upon the GIF format in nearly every
way. It even improves on the JPEG format.
Setting up The Document
• Open, save and import image
• Size Document (Width | Height)
• Resolution (72, 150, 300 and +)

Move Tool

The Move tool (V) is the black arrow at the top of the Tools panel,
Move Tool is the first tool visible in the default Toolbar.

You can also access it by typing “V.” The Move Tool shares space with
the Artboard Tool, which you will see if you click and hold the Move Tool
with the mouse

Main Functions of Move Tool

• Select Objects
• Move Objects
• Duplicate Objects
• Re-Scale Objects
• Re-Refers Objects
Rectangular Marquee Tool and
Elliptical Marquee Tool

• The Marquee Tools (M) make quick selections within your image. By
default, the Rectangular Marquee Tool is visible just under or beside
the Move Tool, depending on how you have your Toolbar configured.

• Marquee Tools (M) are used for selecting objects. such as rectangles,
squares, and ellipses.

• Hold down the (SHIFT + M) key while you click and drag to create a perfect
square (Rectangular Marquee Tool) or perfect circle (Elliptical Marquee Tool).
Release the mouse before you release the SHIFT key to keep the exact
proportions of your selection.

• To deselect your selection, click anywhere on your image, or type CTRL+D.

Lasso, Polygonal Lasso and
Magnetic Lasso Tool

• The Lasso Tools (L) , like the Marquee Tools, create a selection
within your image.

• Any of the three Lasso Tools may be visible in the Toolbar; click and
hold on the visible tool to access the other Lasso Tools. You can
access whichever Lasso Tool is currently visible by typing “L.”

Magic Wand and Quick
Selection Tools

• The Magic Wand Tool selects a portion of your image that has the
same or similar colors.
• This too selects an area of similar colors in a single click (such as the
white in the cloud logo).

• Quick Selection (w) is selection automatically finds defined edges in

the image.
• The Quick Selection Tool selects an object in your image by
interpreting and selecting along defined edges visible in your image
PRACTICAL SESSION
Eyedropper, Crop Tool and
Foreground/Background Color

Eyedropper tool (I): is used to sample a color from an image to use this color further. It's practical as it facilitates
color selection

The Crop Tool allows users to REDEFINE their active image area but not resize the ENTIRE image. It’s
sort of like cutting out a smaller picture from a larger photo with a pair of scissors.

The foreground color and background color can be set to be used to paint with, color text, and fill objects
among other things. This view provides an easy way to see what colors are currently selected, and allows for
easy switching between two different colors.
Type Tools

• The Type Tool (T) is one of the powerful tools in Photoshop, which is
mainly a graphics editing program.

• It is the tool used to create text inside Photoshop, and it has plenty of
settings to control the created text’s properties.

• The Type Tool has always been a part of Photoshop’s “Tool Box” since
its first release as Photoshop 1.0 in 1990.
Main Properties of Type Tool

• Font Family – Set the currently selected type to a

specific font family.
• Font Style – Set the font style of the currently
selected type. Common styles include bold, italic, and
regular.
• Font Size – Change the size of the selected type.
• Fonts Color – You can Change Fonts Color.
Shape Tools
There are 6 Different kind of Shape Tools in all.
1. Rectangle Tool – Creates a rectangle shape (or square if constraining
proportions by holding shift).
2. Rounded Rectangle Tool – Creates a rectangle with rounded corners. The
roundness of the corner can be controlled by setting a radius in the options bar.
3. Ellipse Tool - Creates an ellipse shape (or perfect circle if constraining
proportions by holding shift).
4. Polygon Tool – Creates a polygon shape with a specified number of sides set in
the options bar.
5. Line Tool – Creates a line shape.
6. Custom Shapes – Use predefined shapes (or user created ones) in your graphic
