Introduction
Pollution:
Causes- CO2,CH4,SO2,PM, O3 (Greenhouse gases)

EFFECTS:
• Global warming
• Ozone layer
• Soil, water

Solar roadway
Founder-Jullie and scot brusaw (2006)

It can improve the energy production from solar panel, distribution of rain water, to provide digital platform for smart city.
Facilitate electric car and driverless car and much more!

METHODOLGY
COMPONENT OF SOLAR ROADWAYS

JSPM ICOER 5 DEPT. CIVIL ENGINEERING

1) Glass layer
Made From Tempered Glass
Size-12'x12'
Shape- Hexagonal
Strength-110 Tones
translucent
2) electronic layer
photovoltaic cell
absorb energy from sun
microprocessor board
control heating elements
intensity of led light at day time
3) base plate layer
distribution of power as well as data signals

Application of solar roadways
1) Snow removal:

Most of the country have snowfall. Due to snowfall road are made slippery so it is required to remove and spend
much more money but in solar roadways due to heating element it can be melt automatically and control its
temperature.

Accident

Weather contribute greatly to the number and severity of the accident. Whether related vehicles crashed occur on icy pavement and snowfall . Solar roadways
have opportunity
JSPM ICOER to combat this issue through the snow removal technique.
8 DEPT. CIVIL ENGINEERING
It have sensing data to send the driver before collision of two vehicles.
3) Underground electricity:
solar roadways as not only power generating road but
also cable holding road.
It can generate electricity 70KW/Square M/year
4) water collection and treatment:
after the melting of snow the water flow off through the
drainage an either side of solar road . It have the filtration
unit are installed. And then it collect in storage tank.

5)Traffic engineering

due to smart grid system or smart road system having weight sensor and timing mechanic traffic conjunction could be minimized with the real time signal modification.

JSPM ICOER 10 DEPT. CIVIL ENGINEERING

6) Electricals cars

this point shows the eco-friendly because reduction of the pollution are eliminated and utilization of fuels are reduced. Engineers are even investigating way to
use of mutual induction to charge EVs while they driving car on solar roadways.

Case study
1) barrier to adoption- Technological concern
a) road is made of glass: lack of grip
b) LED light issue:
LED light are innovative and extremely effective during night
there is question regarding to visibility of LED during a day.
Then the solution is need a higher power LED which is visible
in a day.
2) barrier adoption: government
road can be divided into two categories, public and private. We
come to this conclusion the government has the greatest
incentive among road owner to care about public and social.

3) Cost:
cost is different for the rural areas and urban areas
No. of lane Rural area Urban area
(Million (Million
dollar/Mile) dollar/Mile)
2 lane 2-3 4-5

4 lane 4-6 8-10

6 lane 7 12

Live case study:

-Netherland made headline last year when it build the worlds first solar road.
-It build only 70m length.
-It generate 3000 KWh its enough to small householder for year.
-Only notice one fault –a small section of coating which provide grip to surface. The team of solar road is now working to improve the coating

conclusion
• The solar panel road panels and the smart roads that come with
them can make a major environmental, social difference, optimize
the traffic, fuel preservation and many accident are avoided.
• As a conclusion, we would quote Scott Brusaw words:
Everyone has power. No more power shortages, no more roaming power
outages, no more need to burn coal (50% of greenhouse gases). Less
need for fossil fuels and less dependency upon foreign oil. Much less
pollution. How about this for a long term advantage: an electric road
allows all-electric vehicles to recharge anywhere: rest stops, parking lots,
etc. They would then have the same range as a gasoline-powered vehicle.
Internal combustion engines would become obsolete. Our dependency on
oil would come to an abrupt end.

It's time to upgrade our infrastructure - roads and power grid -
to the 21st century.
