PRACTICE USING YOUR OTHER

SENSES (GROUP PROJECT)

DAAN| ENCORPORADO| FERNANDEZ|LIMOTAN|MACABODBOD|ROXAS,|TEJAS
GOAL:
To become more conscious of how much information is provided
when one of your “dominant” Senses is not used or greatly diminished.
ACTIVITY A
Read one of the following books about blindness:
Hull,J.M. (1997).Onsight and insight. Oxford :One world Publications Ltd. or
Hull, J.M. (1990).Touching the rock .NY: Vintage Books.
Spend an hour“ observing” without using your eyes—rely on hearing ,smell ,touch (if
appropriate).During the hour, try to do several different things (e.g., in the past a student had a
friend take her to a store wher she selected and purchased something—all while not using her vision;
another student put on a blindfold immediately upon awakening then went through his morning
routine).
After the observation time has elapsed, write down what you were able to notice .Don’t forget to talk
about each of the other senses you were using .Were there any surprises? How was it trying to figure
out what was going on without vision? What information didy you pick upon that you may have
ignored if you were usingy oure yes?
Continue writing about youre experience .Here are some questions to get your started :
How do your experiences correspond to those of the author? Have your views about blindness
changed now that you have read about blindness book and gone for one hour with outsight?
ANSWERS:
- WHERE THERE ANY SURPRISES?
Yes, there were lots of things that surprised me when I tried blindfolding my eyes. I was
surprised of the feeling of not seeing my surroundings. It gives me the various feelings of being a
blind person for just a short period of time. The feeling of not having an idea where I would go, or
if I am in the right direction to my headed destination or if I am doing the right thing without
seeing it personally was really frightening. The idea of being a blind person scares me a lot if it
happens to me. It also struck me to be grateful for being born healthy and not having any
disability.
- HOW WAS IT TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON WITHOUT VISION?
While performing the activity, I realized that it takes more time and efforts without vision to
perform simple actions and operations, like turning on the Television, I cannot even do and enjoy
many absolute things in my everyday routine. Finally, I understood that, without vision my
movements are limited only. I can't fully enjoy watching movies like we can, I can't read articles and
i cant even surf any of my social media accounts
◦ WHAT INFORMATION DID YOU PICK UPON THAT YOU HAVE IGNORED IF YOU WERE
USING YOUR EYES?
◦ - It was when we cannot focus on what the other person trying to say, you see. When we are blind
we are distracted because we are dividing our energy, seeing and hearing but when i was
blindfolded, When in the house i was talking to my lola i can clearly understand what she said.
Even during TV commercials, when i can see, i ignored what the commercials trying to relay on but
when i was blindfolded. I was able to remember the lines they used to say. I was able to remember
the tiniest details around the house. Even the smell during lunch time, i try putting blindfolds on
while eating, i cannot really appreciate the food when i cant see what im eating unless i taste them .
◦ HOW DO YOUR EXPERIENCES CORRESPOND TO THOSE OF THE AUTHOR?
◦ - Having to experience seeing the world and the surroundings around me and to be blind suddenly
has a huge difference with those people born naturally blind. Because the author also had seen the
world around him, he was able to experience things normal people would do every day. He was
able to achieve doing things he desires because his senses were all complete and then an enormous
change happened that also changes his normal life. It was like enjoying a candy and then someone
had just suddenly taken it away from me. It is a stressful feeling of seeing the world and enjoying it
and then suddenly you can’t enjoy it anymore for being disabled to use the sense of sight.
◦ HAVE YOUR VIEWS ABOUT BLINDNESS CHANGED NOW THAT YOU HAVE READ
ABOUT BLINDNESS BOOK AND GONE FOR ONE HOUR WITHOUT SIGHT?

-Yes, it was really hard , when we cannot see what we used to see. We cannot do, what we used to
do. At first we will be having hard time accepting our faith for being blind, but later on we will
realize that thou we are blind, blindness will never be an excuse to give up. We still have a clear
picture within us to the people we used to see and love. Just like what the author said "I always
carry their faces hidden in my heart, even if everything in the gallery was stolen" the message to
himself about his family. When I talk to the people around me while I was blindfolded, I was able
to identify them by their voices, thou I cant see their faces and expression, the voice of their tone
somehow speak in behalf of their expressions.
