What is safety?
• Safety is the condition of avoiding causing: -
- Damage
- Injury/hurt or
- loss.
Or It is a condition of avoiding accidents
What is industrial safety?
• Industrial safety is the management of all
operations at an organization for protecting both
employees and equipment.
• Industrial safety is a reducing, controlling or
eliminating hazards
Importance of workplace/industrial safety
- Safeguard human life
- Safeguard machines
- Increase work morale
- Decrease medical costs/insurance claims
- Less absenteeism
- Brings a sense of security
- Decrease down time
- Improves productivity
Costs of ignoring industrial safety
• Medical cost
• Compensations cost
• Recruitment cost
• Lost time cost
• Investigation cost
• Lost raw material cost
• Repair damaged facilities cost
• Lost morale cost
• e.t.c
Definition of some terms
- Accidents is a circumstance which causes
harm (damage, injury, hurt or loss).
- Hazard is a potential source of any accident.
- Risk is probability that a specified undesired
event will occur that will result to accident. Or
A risk is the chance of something will happen
that will have a negative effect.
Causes of Hazards
• Biological – bacteria, viruses, insects, plants, birds, animals,
and humans, etc.,
• Chemical – depends on the physical, chemical and toxic
properties of the chemical,
• Ergonomic – repetitive movements, improper set up of
workstation, etc.,
• Physical – radiation, magnetic fields, temperature
extremes, pressure extremes (high pressure or vacuum),
noise, etc.,
• Psychosocial – stress, violence, etc.,
• Safety – slipping/tripping hazards, inappropriate machine
guarding, equipment malfunctions or breakdowns.
Key questions for identification of Hazards
• What materials or situations do I come into contact
with? (Electricity, chemicals, temperature, hot
water etc)
• What materials or equipment could I be struck by?
(Moving objects, flying objects, falling objects)
• What objects or equipment could I strike on?
(stationary or moving objects, protruding objects,
sharp edges, moving objects)
• What can fall on me? (structures, tanks, silos,
leaders, trees)
• How can I overexert force? (lifting, pulling, pushing,
carrying)
Accident proneness
• Accident-prone" means condition which one suffers a
greater number of accidents than normal.
or is a probability that one will be injured due to his/her
deeds
• Causative of accident prone
- Youth
- inexperience on the job
- dissatisfaction with the job
- Lack of safety training
- Sleep disorder
Factors contributing to accidents
• Poor management practices (inadequate
supervision)
• Pressure to meet production targets
• Inadequate safety management systems
(programmes)
• Failure to learn lessons from previous accidents
• Communication issues (between shifts; between
personnel and management etc)
• Inadequate reporting systems

 Chemical (fumes, acids, solvents, fire)
 Biological (bacteria, fungi)
 Psychological (fatigue)
 Mechanical (failures of machines or equipment)
 Forceful exertions
