Summary

The Rattrap is a story of a man who is a peddler and has a

pessimistic attitude towards the world. He resorts to
selling rattraps, begging and even stealing to survive.
Moreover, he also views the world as a big rat trap. He
believes that much similar to the cheese we put for mice,
the world offers us materialistic things to lure us. So, when
we fall for these things, it traps us and takes everything
away from us. In this story, a young generous woman takes
in the rattrap seller. Thus, the generosity and kindness she
shows changes his pessimistic take on life. This story
teaches us about the essential human goodness we all must
possess.
Iron
The Rattrap story by Selma Lagerlof, refers to Iron metal. Iron is a metallic
element (periodic table symbol: Fe) with a melting point of 1150 degrees Celsius
upwards. It is the fourth most widely distributed element on the earth’s crust
but is found as Iron Ore rather than as a useable metal.  Iron ore comes in a
variety of forms and looks like rock

The Ramsjo Ironworks was a large plant for converting Iron Ore
to Iron. It has a smelter, rolling mill, and forge which are all
used in the process of converting Iron Ore to Iron.

Iron ore is mixed with Air that has been heated to Then, impurities are
coke and limestone in a around 1,200 degrees Celsius is removed. The Iron is then
blast furnace. injected into the furnace, cast, cooled and rolled for
creating a flame temperature of use in finished products.
2,000 degrees. This converts
the iron ore to molten pig iron
and slag.
Properties and Uses of Iron
PROPERTIES OF IRON

1. 2. 3.
Iron has magnetic properties
Iron is Malleable and Iron is Ductile and is used
and is used for creating
is used for creating for creating wires
magnets
Iron sheets

USES OF IRON
Iron is most widely used to manufacture steel, used in civil

1. engineering (reinforced concrete, girders etc) and in

manufacturing.

Iron is widely used in the industry due to its property of

2. magnetism. From forming the core of electric motors to

uses in directional compass
OTHER METALS
1. ALUMINUM The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite

Aluminium is a metal denoted by the symbol Al and atomic

number 13. It is a silvery-white, soft, non magnetic
and ductile metal. By mass, aluminium is the most
abundant metal in the Earth’s crust and the third most
abundant element.

2. ZINC Zinc ores are Sphalerite (ZnS), Zincite (ZnO), Franklinite

[ZnO(Fe,Mn)2O3], Calamine [Zn2(OH)2SiO3], and
Smithstone (ZnCO3).

Zinc is a chemical element with the symbol Zn and atomic

number 30. Zinc is a slightly brittle metal at room
temperature and has a blue-silvery appearance when
oxidation is removed
