Noun

 A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, abstract idea, emotions and
feelings.

Examples

 Karachi is the biggest city of Pakistan.

 Jinnah is my idol.

 I am sitting on a sofa.
Kinds of Noun

 Proper Noun

 Common Noun

 Collective Noun

 Countable Noun

 Uncountable Noun

 Abstract Noun
Proper Noun

 It is the name of a specific person, place or thing.

For Example:

 Aqsa is my best friend.

 Faisalabad is my home town.

 I like Turkish Tea.


Common Noun

 It is a name given in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind.

For Example:

 Girls like to read.

 Students of MME are taking English lecture.

 There are forty chairs in this room.


Collective Noun

 A collective noun is the name of a number (or collection) of persons or things


taken together and spoken of as one whole.

For Example:

 Army (collection of soldiers)

 Crowd (collection of people)

 Pakistani army won the 1965 war.

 Police dispersed the crowd.


Abstract Noun

 An abstract noun is usually the name of a quality, action, state, emotions and feelings.

For Example:

 Quality__ Goodness, Kindness, Honesty (Honesty is the best policy.)

 Action__ laughter, theft, judgment (They day of judgment is near.)

 State: youth, slavery, childhood, sleep, death (Islam ended the system of slavery.)

 Emotions and feelings__ Love, hatred, anger (You need to work on your anger
management.)
Abstract Noun Cont.
 The names of the arts and science are also abstract nouns.

For Example: music, grammar, literature, chemistry etc.

Abstract Nouns are formed:

 From Adjectives; as,

Kindness from kind; honesty from honest.

 From Verbs: as,

Obedience from obey; growth from grow.

 From Common Nouns; as,

Childhood from child; slavery from slave.


Countable Nouns

 Countable nouns are the names of objects and people that we can count.

For example: book, pen, boy, sister

 I have 6 books.

 I have 2 pens.

 I have three sisters.


Uncountable Nouns

 Uncountable nouns are the names of things or objects that we cannot count. They
mainly denote substance and abstract things.

For Example: Milk, Honesty, and Water etc.

 Kindly pour me some water.

 Honesty is the best policy.

(Countable nouns have plural forms while uncountable nouns do not. For example, we can say
“books” but we cannot say “milks”.)
