Compounds, and
Mixtures

A. ELEMENTS
• An element is a single substance that cannot be broken down into
other, simpler substances by ordinary chemical reactions.

• Examples of metal elements cadmium, mercury and lead are

presented in Figure

Nonmetal
Elements
Nonmetal elements are generally found
in nature in solid or gaseous form, This
element cannot conduct electricity as
well as heat (insulator), in its solid form
it is neither malleable nor shiny.
Compound
• A single substance in the form of a compound is defined as a
substance formed from various types of elements that are chemically
bonded to each other and have a fixed composition.
• Compounds consist of several elements, so compounds can be
broken down into their elements by certain processes.
• An example of the compound we are most familiar with is water. The
water compound is given the symbol H2O. Water compounds are
formed by two types of elements, namely the element Hydrogen (H)
and the element Oxygen (O), with a composition of 2 elements H
and one element O.

Mixtures
• A mixture is a material composed of several single substances either in the form of
elements or compounds with a composition that is not fixed. In a mixture the properties of
the constituent materials do not change.
• A simple example of a mixture we can find in the kitchen, for example ketchup. This
mixture contains carbohydrates, protein, vitamin C and many other substances. The nature
of carbohydrates, protein and vitamin C has not changed.
• We can divide the mixture into two types, namely a homogeneous mixture and a
heterogeneous mixture.
Homogenous Mixtures
Homogeneous mixture = uniform mixture in which the
constituent materials interact, but do not form new substances
Heterogenous Mixtures
Heterogeneous mixture = a mixture of various kinds, in which
the constituent materials do not interact, so that we can clearly
observe the material that makes up the mixture
