Our Survey Says….
Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson students will be able to:

1. Review the scientific method and the steps involved in carrying out an
experiment
2. Outline the concept of the CBA and understand what is expected.
3. Examine the timeline and plan set out to successfully complete CBA 1
4. Explore and brainstorm research ideas for the 8 assigned topics using
breakout rooms .
Scientific Method Recap
 Forms the basis for all experiments
Hypothesis
 Defined as ‘an educated guess’
 An hypothesis should be written as a statement
 The experiment is then designed to prove the hypothesis correct or incorrect
Experiment design
 The experiment should be designed to accurately and safely measure
what is required by the experiment title.
 The experiment should be fair, accurate and repeatable.
Method
 Basically is like writing and following a recipe – step by step
 It is very important to be as detailed as possible when writing your method

 Every method should have a measurement involved e.g.

Volume: Graduated cylinder
Mass: Electronic balance
Time: Digital watch
Result
 Stick to the exact results of the experiment
 Ensure to include the correct units of your measurements
 Put your collected data in a table
 Draw graph if applicable
Conclusion + Discussion
 Your conclusion is the reasoning behind your results

 Your discussion allows you to address the errors of your experiment

and areas where you could improve with further experimentation.

 Making mistakes is NOT a big deal as long as you identify them

Classroom Based
Assessments - CBA 1
2nd Year Science , April 2021
What is a CBA?
CBA 1 – Extended Experimental
Investigation
Junior Cycle Science Assessment – CBA 1
• CBA1: Extended Experimental Investigation (EEI)

• Can chose from 8 topics

• Can work in groups for Questioning + Predicting, Planning +

Investigating and reflecting on work
BUT
• Each student must individually create and develop their own reports

We are starting this week and will complete over 3 weeks

8 Topics to choose from – Your choice

Water

Food Chemical
Reactions
Plant
growth
and
behaviour Forces
Topics

Earth/Mo
on/Sun
System Plastics
Energy
Conversions
CBA’s: Features of Quality

There are 4 levels of achievement which you can be awarded for your EEI. The
awarded feature of quality descriptor will be printed on your Junior Certificate.

Features of Quality
 Exceptional (E)
 Above Expectations (AE)
 In Line with Expectations (ILE)
 Yet to Meet Expectations (YME)
How will the CBA 1 be graded?
How will I present my investigation?
Presentation formats for your investigations can include but not limited to the
following:
 A hand-written/typed report
 Model building (build a representative model)
 Multimodal presentation
 Podcasts
 Webpage

We will come back to presentation and reporting techniques in future lessons!

Timeline This Week !!
Week 1 (12/04/21)
Questioning + Predicting / Planning + Conducting
Focus on forming groups, choosing our topic, forming our
hypothesis and planning our investigation

Week 2 (19/04/21)
Planning + Conducting / Process + Analysing
Carry out experiment and start to collect and analyse
data. Chose relevant method of presenting investigation

Week 3 (26/04/21)
Process + Analysing / Reflecting + Reporting
Continue to form report of investigation and critically discuss various
aspects of investigation
Activity – 5 mins
Breakout rooms
In your breakout rooms discuss the assigned topic and areas of the topic that may
be interesting to investigate
Assign a reporter to share ideas with class after breakout rooms

 Room 1. Forces
 Room 2. Energy Conversions
 Room 3. Plant growth and behaviour
 Room 4. Earth, Moon,Sun system
 Room 5. Chemical Reactions
 Room 6. Food
 Room 7. Plastics
 Room 8. Water

What next…
 Next were going to form groups and research the different topics and see
what interests you and what you would like to investigate
