Role Of Mentor In Career Planning

Introduction –
 Mentorship is a relationship between two people with the goal of professional
and personal development.
 “Mentor” is usually an experienced individual who shares knowledge,
experience and advice with a less experienced person or “mentee”.
 Mentors become trusted advisors as they support and encourage their mentees.
 The goal is help mentees improve their skills and advance their careers.
Mentors performs the following roles:-
 Coach/Advisor: Mentor gives advice and guidance to the
mentees.
 Setting Goals: Mentor occupies a unique position to assess and
discuss the employee’s dedication to his professional goals.
 Source of Encouragement/Support: Mentor provides insights
into possible opportunities available to employees.
 Resource Person: Mentor identifies the resource to help mentee
enhance personal development and career growth.
 Decision Maker: Mentor helps the mentee in decision making
process and give their unbiased opinions.
 Develop Knowledge and Skills: Mentor can help identify the
skills and expertise needed to succeed.
 Build Network: Mentor can offer an opportunity to expand the
existing network personal and professional contacts.
 Design and Implement Systems and Standards of Performance
Assessment: Mentor helps to clarify the organisation
opportunities to develop and directions for future development.

Thus, if a Mentor is chosen wisely there is likely to be a significant


advancement in employees career.
Requisites Of An Effective Career
Planning
Introduction –
 Career planning is an important activity under human resource
planning.
 Organization/Management have to play a major role in making
the career planning activity successful.
 The organization is responsible for providing the necessary
resources to be successful in the employees career planning.
There Are Certain Requisites That Have
To Be There:-
 Support from Top Management: Complete support and
involvement of the top management is an important requisite
of career planning.
 Developing Career Related Attitude: Employees should be
motivated in career related attitude.
 Clarity in Career Goals: Career decisions may get affected due
to lack of clarity.
 Clear Cut Goals: The overall goals of the company should be
clear.
 Rewards for Performance: There should be suitable rewards
for employees and management.
 Proper Selection and Placement of Employees: Selection of
right type of employees is a requisite for the success of career
planning programme.
 Fair Promotion Policy: There should be fair promotion policies
in place to ensure promotions will be given on merits.
 Continuous Process: Career planning should be on a continuous
process keeping the changing needs of employees.
 Simplicity and Transparency: There should be simplicity and
transparency in career planning.
 Publicity to Career Development Opportunities: There should
be publicity of the career opportunities in the organisation.
 Flexibility in Career Planning: Career planning should be
flexible to accommodate the environmental changes.
 Establishing the Required Infrastructure: The organisation
should develop adequate infrastructure for effective
implementation of career plans meant for employees.
 Effective Mentoring: Building effective and committed
mentoring is required for successful career planning.
