PSYCHOLOGY STUDYING STRESS

• Health Psychology is the study of individuals who deal with


stressors of having an illness and what happens during the
recovery progress
• Environmental Psychology is the study of people and their
surrounding
STRESS AND STRESSORS

• Stress is the result of brain chemicals surging through an individual's body


• Stressors could be many different things to many different people
examples are:
-A big test coming up for a student
-Waiting on results for a medical test
DIFFERENT TYPES OF STRESS
• Acute Stress-is not necessarily good or bad,
-It can cause to use be more focused when an assignment or work
project is due
-your heartrate will increase
-fight or flight response might kick in
• Chronic Stress-repeated exposure to something that allows the
stress hormones to be released from the brain
• Eustress-positive stress, It is caused by a positive response to a
stressor
• Distress-emotional suffering caused by a stressor that we need
to deal with in our day to day lives

• Fight or Flight-
is an automatic
response to a stressor
which causes the
body to go in a fight
or flee response

THE GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME (GAS)

• GAS- the three different stages the body


goes through during stress
1. Alarm Stage
2. Resistance Stage
3. Exhaustion Stage
• GAS-can happen with any time of stress
• The longer you are in the stressful state the
more it can cause problems with your health.
BEHAVIOR STRESS RESPONSE

• Behavior stress responses could be


visible to the naked eye
• Nail biting
• Losing appetite
• Increasing use of drugs, alcohol and
cigarettes
• Fidgeting and pacing
STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS

• Catastrophes-which when something horrible happens such as hurricane or tornado demolishing towns and cities taking months or years to
rebuild
• These events will cause stress on individual's due
-Worry about rebuilding
-The death or injury of their loved ones
-In constant fear of the catastrophe happening again
-Worry about there loves being hurt again
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
-Can cause night terrors
-Flashbacks
-Easily startled
-Sleep disturbances
STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS CONTINUED

• Burnout-is a state of complete mental and physical


exhaustion. This relates to stress because the individual
will not have gotten to the burnout state without an
extreme amount of stress to begin with
• Significant Life Changes-Is when there is significant
change in someone's life. This could include loss of a job
or starting school. This will cause stress because it is not
the normal situation.
• Daily Hassel’s-This the everyday stress that individuals
go through such as school, work and home life. These are
small issues which can fixed quickly but can cause acute
or chronic stress.
STRESS AND IMPACTS ON YOUR HEALTH

• Stress and the Heart-stress can cause issues with the heart. If you having issue issues with chronic stress. You will
be at an increased risk of having coronary artery disease
• Stress and the Immune System-Stress can cause issues with your immune system it can cause you to get a cold
easier. If you have had chicken poxes before. You may get shingles.
• Stress and HIV/AIDS-when having a disease that compromises the immune system. Managing your stress levels
will assist you with managing the disease/
• Stress and Cancer-research is showing that stress can increase the spread of cancer. So managing a stress levels
when fighting this disease can assist you
• Stress and Somatoform Disorder-It when your mind believes something is wrong with you, but there is no support
evidence. Stress will just make this is disorder worse. You will spiral and you believe you have more systems.
COPING WITH STRESS

• Anticipatory Coping-This coping strategy is preparing for a stressful event that you know will happen.
An example would be finishing university/college and needing find a job to pay your student loans.
This event will cause stress through your entire college/university but with proper planning you will be
able to come through this stressor with minimal amount of stress
• Problem-Focused Coping-This the problem-solving coping method. An example would be If a course
is causing a lot of stress. The solution to remove the stress would be to drop the class. This removes
the stressor from you so that you can go back to a calm state.
• Emotion-focused Coping-this coping method would be dealing with the emotions that are causing the
stress. An example would be to use meditation to calm the stressful emotions that you are feeling.
STRESS MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES
• Yoga • Set limits appropriately and
learn to say no
• Meditation
• Get enough rest and sleep
• Exercise
• Don't rely on alcohol,
• Relaxation drugs, or compulsive
behaviors
• Positive Attitude

• Acceptance of things you can’t control

• Be Assertive

• Eat healthy, well-balanced meals

• Learn to manage your time more


effectively
