ANATOMY

The arteries serve to transport blood from the heart to the periphery of the body or the lungs. There are
elastic-type arteries (eg, the aorta, arteries close to the heart) and muscular-type (most arteries, eg, brachial
and femoral arteries). The diminishing arteries lead the blood to the arterioles and, finally, to the blood
capillaries, where the exchange of nutrients and gases takes place between the blood and the tissues.

PATOLOGY

CORONARY ARTERIOSCLEROSIS.
It is a condition in which plaque builds up
inside the arteries. Plaque is a sticky
substance made up of fat, cholesterol,
calcium, and other substances found in
the blood. Over time, this plaque hardens
and narrows the arteries. That limits the
flow of oxygen-rich blood.

SURGICAL OBJECTIVE

It is a procedure in which a small

balloon catheter is inserted into a
blocked blood vessel to help widen it
and improve blood flow to the heart.
