CONTENTS
• FLYING CAPACITORS MULTI LEVEL
INVERTER
• PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
• FEATURES OF FCMIL
MULTILEVEL INVERTER?
• It is power electronic device capable of
providing desired alternating voltage at output.
• Using multiple lower level DC voltages as
input.
• The harmonic should be minimized by the
introduction of more levels in the output
voltage.
• They are classified into 3 types they are
(a).Diode clamped multilevel inverter
(b).Flying capacitors multilevel
inverter
(c).Cascade multilevel inverter

A Five level flying capacitors single phase inverters

ONE LEG OF A FIVE LEVEL FLYING CAPACITOR MULTILEVEL
INVERTER
• The numbering order of the switches is Sa1, Sa2
Sa3, Sa4,S`a4,S`a3,S`a2 and S`a1.
• Switching order is different from diode
clamped inverter.
• Each capacitor has same voltage rating.
• Three inner loop balancing capacitors(Ca1,Ca2
and Ca3) for phase leg a not depending on leg b
• All legs share same DC Link capacitors.
• An ‘n’ level inverter needs :
Number of voltage sources Ndc = (n-1)
Number of switching devices Nsd = 2(n-1)
Number of balancing capacitors Nbc = (n-1)
(n-2)/2
Number of DC bus capacitors Nc = (n-1)
Operation:
For an output voltage level :
• V0=Vdc (turn on all upper half switches Sa1
through Sa4)
• V0=Vdc/2(turn on three upper switches Sa1 through
Sa3 and one lower switch S`a4)
• V0=0 (turn on two upper switches Sa1 & Sa2 and
two lower switch S`a4 & S`a3)
• V0 = -Vdc/2 (turn on one upper switch Sa1 and
three lower switches S`a4 through S`a2 )
• V0 = -Vdc (turn on all lower half switches S`a4
through S`a1)
•One possible switch combination of
the flying capacitor
