WHAT IS
DEHYDRATION?
Dehydration is a condition that occurs when you lose more body fluids than you take
in by drinking, usually water. Every day, you lose water in the water vapor you
breathe out and in your sweat, urine, and bowel movements.
WHEN DOES
DEHYDRATION OCCUR?
 Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your
body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions.

 Dehydration can occur by just simply going long periods of time without drinking
water.

 Dehydration can also be caused by excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea. Water


loss is usually accompanied by a deficiency of electrolytes.

WAYS TO AVOID AND PREVENT
DEHYDRATION
 Drink plenty of water.

 Eat foods with high amounts of water like fruits and vegetables.

 Avoid or limit drinks with caffeine like coffee, teas and soft drinks.

 Avoid or limit drinks with alcohol.

 When planning an outdoor activity, drink about two glasses of water 1-2
hours before the activity to make sure you are well hydrated.
