century idealised the Elizabethan era
m Elizabethan England was not
particularly successful in a military
sense during the period. The grinding
poverty of the rural working class, which
comprised 90 percent of the population,
has also received more attention than in
previous generations.

provided the country with a long period of
general if not total peace, and generally
increasing prosperity. Having inherited a
virtually bankrupt state from previous
reigns, her frugal policies restored fiscal
responsibility. Her fiscal restraint cleared
the regime of debt by 1574, and ten years
later the Crown enjoyed a surplus of
£300,000.

Shakespeare's time more directly than she
did his work specifically. She fostered a
society where an artist like Shakespeare,
and many others, could not only survive
but could flourish and bless future
generations with outstanding work.
The availability of food during the Elizabethan Era was based on economic
and social class standing. Home grown produce was used to feed the majority
of the English. Poor harvests which occurred during the 1590·s, had a bad effect
on the economy and led to starvation in some areas.

1. Boil a Capon or Hen with ysters
Take either of them, and fill the belly of it with oysters, and truss it
2. Boil it in white wine, water, the liquor of the oysters, a blade or two
of mace, a little pepper whole, and a little salt;
3. when it is boiled enough, take the oysters out of the belly, and put
them into a dish
4. Take some butter, and some of the liquor it was boiled in, and two
anchovies with the yolks of eggs well beaten, heat these together over the
fire, and then put your oysters into it
5. Garnish your dish with lemon sliced thin, and some of the oysters,
also some pickled barberries and raw parsley, then lay your capon or
hen in the middle of it, and pour the sauce upon the breast of it, then lay
on sliced lemon and serve it in

1. Take a hogs liver boiled and cold, grate it
2. Take new milk and the fat of a hog minced fine, put it to the
bread and the liver
3. Divide it into two parts, then dry herbs or other if you can minced
fine, put the Herbs into one part with beaten Spice, Anniseeds,
Rosewater, Cream and Eggs, Sugar and Salt, so fill the Skins and
boil them
4. To the other part put preserved Barberries, diced Dates, Currans,
beaten Spice, Salt, Sugar, Rosewater, Cream and Eggs, so mix them
well together, and fill the Skins and boil them

1. Take two quarts of new milk, a white loaf - sliced very thin
2. Make the milk scalding hot, put the bread in it and strain it
through a colander
3. Put in four eggs, a little spice, sugar, raisins, and currants, a
little salt and bake it
The Elizabethan Era was more notable for its fashion
ideas and the way people found self-expression through
it. ne may note that in the beginning of the Elizabethan
Era, women·s clothing in particular were a very modest
affair.
Clothing in the Elizabethan Era also saw an influence
of geometric shapes. Here, it was not about maintaining or
showcasing the natural body structure. Methods such as
padding and quilting were used to stiffen the fabric so
that it could retain the shape with an emphasis on the
shoulder and the hip area. Basically, the main motive
behind this kind of concept in clothing was utilized to give
an impression of a small waist. This does not mean only
women desired to have small waists, men also made use
of certain types of clothing such as the girdles to give a
really thin look to the body.
